What is CSAB 2026?
The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB), formerly known as Central Counselling Board (CCB), is constituted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It manages centralized UG admissions for Engineering (B.Tech/B.E.), Architecture (B.Arch), and Planning (B.Plan) programs across the NIT+ System – comprising NITs, IIEST, IIITs, SPAs, and Other-GFTIs – based on JEE Main ranks.
CSAB kicks in after JoSAA rounds are completed and fills remaining vacant seats through Special Rounds. Unlike JoSAA, CSAB does not require prior JoSAA participation – a valid JEE Main 2026 rank alone qualifies you.
CSAB 2026 Key Highlights:
- 2 Special Rounds (Phase I and Phase II)
- 114 institutes, ~48,000 seats (9 new GFTIs added in 2026)
- Coordinated by IIEST Shibpur (not NIT Rourkela — that was a previous arrangement)
- Also includes NEUT Round (for NE states & UTs) and Supernumerary Round (for select UTs)
- Fresh registration mandatory at csab.nic.in even if you registered in JoSAA

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB Participating Colleges 2026
Q1. How many total institutes participate in CSAB 2026?
114 institutes in total — 31 NITs + 1 IIEST Shibpur + 26 IIITs + 3 SPAs + 53 Other-GFTIs (including 9 newly added GFTIs in 2026).
Q2. Who is the coordinating institute for CSAB 2026?
IIEST Shibpur (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, West Bengal) is the coordinating institute for CSAB 2026 and DASA 2026, as officially notified by the Ministry of Education. Prof. V.M.S.R Murthy, Director of IIEST Shibpur, is the Chairman of CSAB 2026.
Q3. Do IITs participate in CSAB 2026?
No. IIT admissions happen exclusively through JoSAA based on JEE Advanced ranks. CSAB covers only the NIT+ system.
Q4. What is the official CSAB 2026 website?
csab.nic.in — all registration, choice filling, seat allotment, and document upload happen on this portal only.
Q5. How many total seats are available in CSAB 2026?
Approximately 48,000 seats across 114 institutes in 2026 — a massive jump from ~14,000 seats in 2025 due to 9 new GFTIs being added.
Q6. Can I participate in CSAB if I didn’t register for JoSAA?
Yes. A valid JEE Main 2026 rank is sufficient. JoSAA registration is not mandatory for CSAB.
Q7. What is the NEUT Round in CSAB?
NEUT (North-Eastern Union Territory) Round allocates seats in AICTE-approved institutes for eligible candidates from North-Eastern states and specific Union Territories under a special Government of India reservation scheme.
Q8. What is the CSAB Supernumerary Round?
A dedicated round creating additional seats in select NITs for candidates from Andaman & Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
Q9. What is the difference between a GFTI and an NIT?
NITs are governed by the NIT Act and hold the status of Institutes of National Importance. GFTIs are funded by the government but operate under central/state university structures or as autonomous bodies. Both participate in JoSAA/CSAB. NITs generally have higher cutoffs, stronger brand recognition, and more consistent placements. GFTIs offer more diverse programs, lower fees, and broader geographic reach.
Q10. When will the official CSAB 2026 seat matrix be released?
The official Vacant Seat Matrix for CSAB 2026 will be published at csab.nic.in on July 28, 2026, the same day registration opens.
