CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Exam 2026: LOC Submission Open, Exam Rescheduled to July 28

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has begun the online List of Candidates (LOC) submission process for the Class 12 Supplementary Examination 2026, through the Pariksha Sangam portal. The window opened on June 30, 2026, and closes on July 8, 2026. In a notable change from its earlier notification, CBSE has revised the supplementary exam date from July 15 to July 28, 2026 – a single-day examination.

This year, 1,89,095 CBSE Class 12 students have been placed in the Compartment category – a sharp rise from 1,22,170 in the previous cycle – making this one of the largest supplementary exam pools CBSE has processed in recent years.

Why the Exam Date Was Changed

CBSE’s original press release (dated May 13, 2026) had fixed the supplementary exam for July 15, 2026. However, the board later revised this to July 28, 2026, in the notice accompanying the LOC submission window. The postponement drew visible frustration from students on social media; many of whom flagged concerns about the compressed timeline this creates for college admissions – since supplementary results typically feed directly into ongoing UG counselling cycles that run through July and August. CBSE has not issued a separate clarification specifically addressing the admissions-timeline concern as of this update; students dependent on their compartment result for a specific college admission deadline should check directly with the university’s admission cell about any accommodation for late-declared CBSE results.

Who Is Eligible for the CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Exam 2026

CBSE has specified the following categories of regular students as eligible:

  1. Students declared “Compartment” in the 2026 Class 12 board result (first chance) – failed in one subject in the main 2026 exam.
  2. Students placed in Compartment for the second consecutive time (having failed the subject earlier too) – subject to CBSE’s standard multi-attempt rule.
  3. Compartment students on their third/final chance (i.e., those who first appeared for Class 12 in 2025 and have failed to clear the compartment subject in the intervening attempt) – these students can appear only as private candidates, not through their school’s regular LOC.
  4. Improvement of Performance candidates – students who passed all subjects in the main 2026 exam but wish to improve their score in exactly one subject they had already appeared for. For this category, the better of the two scores (main exam or supplementary attempt) is considered final.

Important eligibility limits:

  • Only students who failed in one or two subjects qualify for compartment status. Failing in three or more subjects makes a student an “Essential Repeat” case – not eligible for the supplementary exam; the student must repeat the full academic year.
  • If a student passed the theory portion of a subject but failed the practical (or vice versa), they may need to reappear in both components — this varies by subject, so students should verify their exact status from their result before assuming only one paper is pending.
  • Students must have secured a minimum of 33% overall in the main examination to be eligible in the first place.

How Schools Submit the LOC (For Regular Students)

Regular students cannot apply directly on the CBSE website – only their school can submit their name through the LOC process. Here’s exactly how it works:

  1. School logs into the Pariksha Sangam portal using its Affiliation Number as user ID and existing password.
  2. Generates the list of Compartment/Improvement candidates through the school login.
  3. Selects each student’s roll number and the specific subject they need to appear in.
  4. Finalises the application to generate an Application ID.
  5. Pays the examination fee online only — no offline challan payment is accepted this cycle.
  6. Downloads and retains the final authenticated LOC copy along with the fee receipt for school records.

Critical warning from CBSE: If a student’s name is not included in the LOC by the school, that student permanently loses the opportunity to appear in the Supplementary Examination 2026 – there is no individual override or late-entry mechanism. CBSE has specifically directed schools to include the names of all eligible Compartment students even if the school is unable to personally contact them, so students should not assume their school will skip them just because they haven’t been in touch – but should still proactively confirm their name is on the list well before July 8.

How Private Candidates Apply

Students not currently enrolled in any CBSE-affiliated school (including those in their third/final compartment chance) must apply directly:

  1. Visit the CBSE portal and locate the private candidate compartment application section.
  2. Enter your CBSE registration number, roll number, and personal/identity details.
  3. Upload your original Compartment result/marksheet as proof of eligibility.
  4. Select the subject you need to appear in.
  5. Pay the fee online – net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI.
  6. Download and save the confirmation page; this is your proof of successful application.

Examination Fee

According to the official June 30 circular, the fee structure notified for this Supplementary Examination cycle is:

CategoryFee
Schools within India₹320
Schools in Nepal₹1,100
Schools outside India (other than Nepal)₹2,200

All payments must be made digitally through the portal.

CBSE has explicitly clarified there is no challan payment facility available this time – schools and private candidates must ensure the fee is successfully credited to the Board’s account before the July 8 deadline, since an LOC submitted without a confirmed fee credit will not be accepted. Given fee structures can carry subject-wise or practical-component variations, candidates should cross-verify the exact payable amount on the Pariksha Sangam portal at the time of submission rather than relying solely on a flat figure.

Documents Required

  • CBSE Class 12 (2026) main exam admit card
  • Original Compartment/result marksheet showing the subject(s) to be cleared
  • School ID card or CBSE registration proof (for private candidates)
  • A valid government photo ID
  • Passport-size photographs (as specified by the school/portal at the time of LOC/application)
  • Fee payment receipt/confirmation

Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The Supplementary Examination follows the same syllabus, question paper pattern, and marking scheme as the main Class 12 board examination held earlier in 2026. There is no reduced or altered syllabus for the compartment attempt – students are expected to prepare the full subject as per the current academic year’s CBSE curriculum.

Passing Criteria

To clear the Supplementary Examination, a student must secure a minimum of 33% marks in the subject – calculated across theory, practical, and internal assessment components as applicable to that subject. Where a subject has both theory and practical components, the 33% threshold generally applies to each component separately, not just the combined total – students should check their subject’s specific breakup, since this affects how close they actually are to clearing it.

What Happens After the Exam

  • If you clear the subject: CBSE issues a consolidated marksheet reflecting your original main-exam marks in all other subjects and your new supplementary-exam marks in the cleared subject. This is treated as your final, valid Class 12 marksheet for all purposes, including college admissions.
  • If you don’t clear it: You remain eligible for a further attempt in the next available CBSE compartment cycle, subject to the board’s overall attempt limit — students typically get up to three total attempts (including the main exam) to clear a subject before being required to repeat the full academic year as a fresh candidate.
  • Improvement category candidates: Regardless of whether the new score is higher or lower, CBSE considers the better of the two scores (main exam vs. supplementary attempt) as final — so there’s no risk in attempting an improvement exam from a pure marks standpoint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I apply for the CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Exam 2026 directly, without going through my school?
A: No – if you’re a regular student who appeared through a CBSE-affiliated school, your school must submit your name via the LOC. Only private candidates and third-chance compartment students apply directly.

Q: What if my school doesn’t submit my name by July 8?
A: You will not be able to appear for the July 28 exam. There is no late-entry provision, so it’s critical to personally confirm with your school that your name has been included well before the deadline.

Q: I failed in two subjects – can I appear for the supplementary exam?
A: Yes, as long as you failed in exactly one or two subjects, you’re eligible to appear for the compartment paper(s) in those subjects.

Q: I failed in three subjects – what happens to me?
A: You fall under CBSE’s “Essential Repeat” category and are not eligible for the supplementary exam. You would need to repeat the full academic year as a fresh regular candidate.

Q: Can I improve my marks in more than one subject?
A: No – the Improvement of Performance category is limited to exactly one subject, even if you wish to raise scores in more.

Q: Will my supplementary exam center be the same as my main exam center?
A: Not necessarily – exam centre allocation for the supplementary exam is done separately and will be reflected on your admit card once released.

Q: When will the admit card be released?
A: CBSE has stated the admit card release date will be communicated separately; it has not been announced as part of the June 30 LOC circular.

Q: Is the syllabus reduced for the supplementary exam?
A: No, the syllabus and paper pattern remain identical to the main Class 12 board exam.

Q: When can I expect my supplementary result?
A: Based on CBSE’s typical timeline, results are usually declared 3–4 weeks after the exam date — for a July 28 exam, this would likely place the result in late August 2026, though CBSE hasn’t officially confirmed a specific result date yet.

Q: Will this delayed exam date affect my college admission this year?
A: It could, depending on the specific college’s admission and counselling deadlines. Since the result is now expected later than originally planned, students relying on their supplementary result for a specific admission cycle should proactively check with their target college or university about any accommodation for late CBSE compartment results.

Q: Is this my last chance to clear the subject?
A: That depends on how many attempts you’ve already used. Regular first-time compartment students still have further attempts available in future cycles if needed; students on their third/final chance must appear as private candidates and should treat this as their last opportunity before being required to repeat the year.

Q: Do I need to reappear for the practical exam too?
A: Only if you failed the practical component specifically, or if your subject’s rules require both theory and practical to be retaken together — check your original result breakdown carefully before assuming only the theory paper is pending.

A compartment result isn’t the end of the road – it’s simply one more step, and with the right information, that step becomes a lot less stressful. From LOC deadlines to exam-day requirements to what happens after your result is declared, staying on top of every detail can make the difference between a smooth second chance and a missed opportunity. Manabadi will continue tracking every update on the CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Exam 2026 – including the admit card release, exam day guidelines, and result date – so students and parents don’t have to search elsewhere.
