“With the boom in the aviation
sector and Indian skies opening up to private air carrier, the demand for
pilots has touched the skies”
With the boom in the
aviation sector and Indian skies opening up to private air carriers,
more aircrafts to join the fleet to meet the growing number of air
passengers, the demand the pilots has gone up like never before.
With the number of pilots emerging from the training institutes every year not
enough to meet the demand, expatriates are employed by various airlines.
According to industry estimates, about 5,000 pilots are required in the next
five to seven years.
Educational and health criteria
The minimum qualification for the commercial pilot training
is plus two qualification with Maths and Physics.
A candidate is evaluated for all
requisite personality traits in the pre- induction process, including cockpit
test and followed by medical evaluation. Two types of medical tests are
conducted, Class II and ClassI class I is for evaluation of sugar, cholesterol,
ECG, EEG, ENT, colour blindness test, chest X-ray blood pressure ect., by recognized
Air Force doctors.
Wearing spectacles will not be a disqualification so long as
the vision is 6x6 with corrective lens. Nor is there any restriction for height
and weight provided the person is proportionate in height and weight. Passion
for flying besides dedication and discipline are important traits for an
aspiring pilot.
Besides flight schools in the
twin cities and other parts of the country, many students go abroad for pilot
training in Australia, Canada, Philippines. South Africa besides US. But these students on return
to India should convert for DGCA licence by taking a theory exam again.
Costs
Commercial
pilot training costs around Rs.16 lakh for an 18-month programme in India
and Rs.20 lakh to Rs.22 lakh for a 10-month programme abroad offering 200 hours
of flying to get the licence from Director General of Civil Aviation.
After a trained pilot clears the
test to get DGCA licence, he would land a job as first officer in a small
aircraft to begin with and after required hours of flying and a test, becomes
the captain. As they gather experience, they are upgraded to bigger aircraft.
With bank loan facility
available, a candidate would get back the money, he spent on training within
nine months of his or her employment as they make anywhere between Rs.1 lakh to
Rs.1.5 lakh.
The career of pilot is quite long
as the retirement age is 69 years provided they clear annual medical tests. If
one is declared unfit to fly, they still can take a ground duty job or become
flight instructor, anther lucrative career. With maximum 125 hours of flying a
month, young pilots would have ample time to acquire a desired qualification
through online or distance mode education in aviation management, aircraft
maintenance, aeronautical engineering ect..
