Program Objective: Attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally; Develop their leadership potential; and Position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow, positively contributing to Canadas economic, social and research-based growth through a research-intensive career. Program Scope : 70 new two-year awards annually with a total of 140 awards active at any one time. The fellowships will be distributed equally across Canadas three federal granting agencies: The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), The Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Value of the Fellowship: $70,000 per year (taxable) Duration: for two years Eligibility: Applicants for the 2011/12 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program must fulfill or have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree: a. On a date within the eligibility window of November 2, 2008 through December 31, 2011. Applicants who have not fulfilled all requirements for their degree at the time of application must do so no later than December 31, 2011 and submit related proof to the Banting program accordingly no later than January 15, 2012. Applicants who do not submit such proof will be automatically withdrawn from the competition. OR b. no earlier than November 2, 2006 if they have had their career interrupted or delayed for the purpose of childrearing, illness, or health-related family responsibilities or, for health professionals only, have engaged in post-degree non-research related clinical training (residency, etc). Applicants must document any interruptions, delays, or post-degree clinical training in the Special Circumstances attachment.

Eligibility Requirements Related to Host Institution Institutions eligible to host a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship award holder include Canadian and International universities, affiliated research hospitals, colleges and not-for-profit organizations with a strong research mandate and capacity. Canadian government (federal, provincial and municipal) and all for-profit organizations are not eligible to participate as host institutions. Applicants who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents may only hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at a Canadian institution. Applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who obtained their PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree from a foreign university may only hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at a Canadian institution. Applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who obtained their PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree from a Canadian university may hold their award at either a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada. Note that the number of Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships that may be awarded annually to those who apply in collaboration with a foreign institution is capped at 25%. Only in exceptionally rare circumstances will a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship be awarded to an applicant who is staying at the same institution where they completed their PhD, PhD- equivalent or health professional degree. If an applicant chooses to apply in collaboration with the same institution (or its affiliated hospitals, research centres and other laboratories) at which they obtained their PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree, a solid justification - related for example to availability of highly unique equipment - must be included in the Special Circumstances attachment... These situations are expected to be exceptionally rare in the context of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program. Eligibility Restrictions Related to Prior Agency-Specific Postdoctoral Funding (CIHR/NSERC/SSHRC) Applicants must meet the Eligibility Window for Degree Completion described above. Applicants who meet this requirement and who currently hold or have held agency-specific awards at the postdoctoral level are eligible to apply to the 2011-12 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program ONLY if the term of that funding officially ends on or before September 30, 2012 and prior to the start of the Banting Fellowship. Early termination of the agency specific postdoctoral award for the purposes of application for Banting postdoctoral funding is not permitted. Note that applicants to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program remain eligible to apply to agency-specific postdoctoral-level fellowship program competitions.

Location and Timing of Award Tenure Candidates who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who obtained their PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree from a Canadian university may hold their award at either a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada. Note that the number of Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships that may be awarded annually to those who apply in collaboration with a foreign institution is capped at twenty-five percent overall (up to 18 of the 70 annual awards). Candidates who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents may only hold their award at a Canadian institution. Canadian citizens and permanent residents who obtained their PhD or health professional degree from a foreign university may only hold their award at a Canadian institution
