National Cancer Awareness Day is observed on November 07 every year in India. The National Cancer Awareness Day is celebrated to generate awareness about cancer prevention and early detection.
Highlights:
♦ The National Cancer Awareness Day is closely connected to the scientist Madame Curie`s birth anniversary.
♦ Marie Curie, a scientist, is recognised for her invention of radium and polonium (radioactive materials), as well as for her involvement to cancer control.
♦ Marie Curie`s work led to the creation of radiotherapy and nuclear energy for cancer treatment. On November 07, 2014 in India, the 1st National Cancer Awareness Day was recognised.
♦ Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death worldwide in 2018, according to the WHO (World Health Organization), there were approximately 18 million cases worldwide, of which 1.5 million came mostly from India.
♦ In 2018, there were about 0.8 million deaths from cancer in India, comparison to 9.5 million worldwide. It is estimated that the number of new cancer cases in India will double by 2040. Around 1.1 million new cases are reported in India every year.
♦ Nearly two-thirds of cases are only diagnosed at an advanced stage, reducing the likelihood of survival for patients. It is estimated that one woman in India dies of cervical cancer every 8 minutes.
♦ Tobacco use accounted for 3,17,928 deaths (approx) in men and women in 2018.
♦ Oral cavity cancers and lungs cancers account for over 25% of deaths in males and breast cancer and oral cavity cancer account for 25% cancers in females.
♦ To provide cancer treatment facilities in the country, the National Cancer Control Program was established in 1975. In 1984-85, it was enacted to provide a motivation for cancer early detection and prevention.
National Legal Services Day is on 9th November
The National Legal Services Day is observed on 9th November annually to spread awareness for ensuring reasonable fair and justice procedure for all citizens.
Highlights:
♦ National Legal Services Day (NLSD) was first begun by the Supreme Court of India in 1995 to give assistance and backing to poor and more vulnerable segments of the general public.
