For teachers, disruptive behavior always presents problems in class. Thus, as classroom managers and leaders, we tend to discipline students and give warnings. This in turn gives us that mere hope that the said individuals will not repeat the actions in the long run.
Often, teachers have a hard time deciphering the disparity as to what role they should be in terms of disciplining students. Should they put in that harsh face or keep it subtle. Some teachers however, call the students and warn them of the actions. Bu the sad thing is that they end up being called by the director and being reprimanded in return. As a teacher they don`t know which shoe to fit in. Therefore, here are some things you should not in terms of disciplining a student or a group of them.
1. Do not scold them in class. Students have feelings too. When they are being noisy, do not acknowledge their action in front of everyone else. This is a form of feeding them the thought that you have recognized them. In turn, they might be embarrassed by their fellow classmates and will end up doing the actions again and again. Students are often just testing their teachers` patience. If you feel the need to tell them that what they did was wrong, do it personally with the students involved, away from the eyes of their peers.
2. Do not let the any disruptive behavior pass. The first offense is the most critical turning point in your discipline methodology. Thus, if a student misbehaved in class for the first time, do not let this pass. Talk to him personally and identify what he or she had done wrong. Do not let one error left unnoticed. If you do, students will simply think that you can welcome such behavior in your classroom. Thus with this, they might do the disruptive behavior again.
3. Never run out of patience. This could be very difficult to do, but as a teacher, patience is always a virtue and must always be present. To the extent possible, contain all the anger and stress when you discipline a student or group of students. For one thing, when you lose that value it can trigger anger and rage. This in turn can lead to yelling and saying bad words to them. For sure this can be reported by the students and might be used against you. Therefore, you need to be very careful. Maintain a peaceful mind every day and transition into something calm when a bad situation arises. Do not succumb to anger. Lengthening our patience takes time to inculcate it within ourselves but it is the only way for us to never lose our cool.
As a teacher your job does not simply begin and end with a simple everyday lecture. There is still depth and more to it than you can ever imagine. Thus, take this as a guide when something unexpected happens. This will also save you and your profession as well. Disruptive behavior in class need not be something difficult to handle but rather considered a challenge for any teacher to overcome.
