President Kovind conferred the 2017 to 2018 NSS Awards:

President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the National Service Scheme Awards 2017-18 in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. 

Aim of the award:

The award aims to recognize and reward the outstanding contributions towards voluntary community service made by the Universities and Senior Secondary Councils, NSS Units/ Programme Officers and NSS Volunteers.

National Service Scheme Awards:

The National Service Scheme is conferred by the Department of Youth Affairs under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports every year.

The National Service Scheme Awards 2017-18 was awarded in 3 categories namely:

1) University/ +2 Council

2) NSS Units and their Programme Officers

3) NSS Volunteers

Under the University/ +2 Council category 2 candidates were awarded.

Under the NSS Units and their Programme Officers category 10+10 candidates were awarded.

Under the NSS Volunteers category 30 candidates were awarded.

Note:

 

The National Service Scheme (NSS) Scheme was launched on 24th September 1969. This year NSS celebrates the Golden Jubilee year.

Greta Thunberg, 16 year old, won alternative Nobel Prize:

Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg was named as one of four winners of the 2019 Right Livelihood Award. The award is also known as Sweden`s alternative Nobel Prize. She was awarded for inspiring and amplifying political demands for urgent climate action reflecting scientific facts. The award was announced by the Right Livelihood Foundation. The awardees triggered a thirst to strive for a liveable future for all on planet Earth.

Awardees:

Along with Thunberg, 3 other visionaries were awarded. The award recipients are:

Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg

Chinese women`s rights lawyer Guo Jianmei

Davi Kopenawa of the Yanomami people, the Brazilian indigenous leader 

Western Sahara human rights defender Aminatou Haidar. 

The 4 laureates received a cash award of 1 million Swedish crowns ($103,000) each.

Thunberg:

 

The 16-year-old denounced the world leaders for failing to tackle climate change in a speech at the start of a climate summit at the United Nations in New York. The climate activist started solitary weekly protests outside the Swedish parliament a year ago. Millions of young people were inspired by her and started to demand the governments that attended the summit to take emergency action.
