1) 68th Primetime Emmy Awards announced.

  • The 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards was announced on 18 September 2016 at the Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles, California, U.S.
  • The Game of Thrones won best drama series at the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards, while Veep took home the top comedy award.
The People v. O.J. Simpson:
  1. American Crime Story also earned several awards, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her fifth consecutive Emmy in the lead comedy actress category.
2) Aung San Suu Kyi honoured as 2016 Humanitarian of the Year by Harvard Foundation.
  • Nobel laureate and Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi was honoured as the 2016 Humanitarian of the Year by the students and faculty at the Harvard Foundation.
  • She gained international prominence as the General Secretary of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar in 1990.
3) Adi Godrej conferred Clinton Global Citizen Award.
  • Adi Godrej, the Chairman of Mumbai-based Godrej Group, was conferred the 10th Annual Clinton Global Citizen Award for leadership in business and philanthropy.
  • The award recognises Godrej`s leadership in transforming the intersection of business and philanthropy and making the Godrej Group a global example of what can be achieved through inclusive, sustainable business strategies.
  • The award was presented by Hikmet Ersek, CEO and President of Western Union, in the presence of former US President Bill Clinton.
  • Some of the other awardees for the year 2016 include Jon Bon Jovi for the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation in the US, President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia and Hawa Abdi of Somalia.
4) French Award to Sajid Nadiadwala.
  • Sajid Nadiadwala was conferred France’s prestigious Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) award.
  • The honour is conferred on persons who have distinguished themselves by their creativity in the field of art, culture and literature or for their contribution to the influence of arts in France and throughout the world.
  • French Ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler conferred the honour in recognition of Nadiadwala’s contribution to boosting Indo-French partnership in cinema.
  • Previous Indian recipients include: the late Sivaji Ganesan, melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, superstar Shah Rukh Khan and actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan among others.
5) 2016 Right Livelihood Award announced.
  • The 2016 Right Livelihood Award widely referred as the Alternative Nobel Prize was announced in Stockholm, Sweden. The laureates of this year’s Right Livelihood Award include.
  • Syria Civil Defence (The White Helmets)
  • Egypt’s Mozn Hassan and Nazra for Feminist Studies
  • Russia’s Svetlana Gannushkina
  • Turkish daily Cumhuriyet
  • The laureates will share the 3.0-million-kronor (350000 dollar) prize.
6) Sanjay Dutta, Ritesh Sarothiya selected for Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement Awards.
  • Two Indian forest officials, Sanjay Dutta and Ritesh Sarothiya, have been selected for the 2016 Clark R. Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement Awards.
  • Clark R. Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement Awards honours individuals engaging in exemplary law enforcement actions to protect wildlife.
  • Sanjay Dutta is the range officer of Belakoba Forest Range Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and Ritesh Sarothiya is the assistant conservator of Madhya Pradesh State Forest.
  • The award ceremony will be held on 3 October 2016 at the 17th Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in Johannesburg, South Africa.

7) Indian-origin physician Abraham Varghese gets National Humanities Medal in US.

  • An Indian-American physician and author, Abraham Varghese, has been presented with the National Humanities Medal, America`s highest humanities award, by President Barack Obama.
  • He was presented with the medal for his contribution in the field of medicine along with several other recipients at a ceremony held at the White House.
  • Currently a professor of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine, Varghese has authored several acclaimed books.
8) Tamil Film ``Visaranai`` is India’s official entry for 2017 Oscar.
  • Visaranai, a Tamil film directed by Vetrimaran and produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films, has been selected as India`s entry in the Foreign Language Film category for the 89th Academy Awards (Oscars) to be held in 2017.
  • The national award-winning film documents four migrant workers who suffer police brutuality and corruption after being jailed on false charges.
  • The film is based on true events recorded in novel Lock Up written by M Chandrakumar, an auto rickshaw driver from Coimbatore.
9) The Hindu wins reader engagement awards.
  • The Hindu has been awarded the Silver and Bronze awards in the `Best Reader Engagement` category of the South Asian Digital Media Awards at the WAN-IFRA (World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers) India 2016 conference in Kolkata.
  • The Silver award went to the Ask Ashwin Contest from The Hindu Group’s sportstarlive.com. 
  • The Hindu’s online coverage of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Campaign 2016 bagged the Bronze award in the Best Reader Engagement category. The awards were presented at a glittering ceremony.
10) Union Minister Radha Mohan Singh presented Antyodaya Krishi Puruskars.
  • Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh gave away Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Antyodaya Krishi Puruskars to 12 farmers for their contribution in the agriculture sector.
  • They were felicitated during a function at the birth place of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay in Mathura.
National Award for the year 2016:
  1. Krishna Yadav, an enterprising lady farmer from, Dinpur, Najafgarh, New Delhi for her outstanding achievements in the processing and value addition of food especially fruits and vegetables.
11) Lopamudra Raut, the second runner-up at Miss United Continents 2016.
  • Lopamudra Raut makes india proud as she stands tall as the second runner-up at Miss United Continents 2016, which was held in Ecuador.
  • 32 participants from the four continents of America, Asia, Europe and Africa were a part of this grand event. 
  • Jeslyn Santos from Philippines won the Miss United Continents 2016 title; Lopamudra Raut won the second runner-up title.
12) First Jesse Owens Award goes posthumously to Muhammad Ali.
  • The first-ever Jesse Owens Olympic Spirit Award-2016 will be posthumously bestowed to Olympic champion Muhammad Ali, who passed away on June 3, 2016.
  • It will be accepted by his wife Lonnie Ali. 
  • The annual award will recognize an individual(s) who has served as a powerful force for good in society, inspiring others by contributing to a better world, uniting people or leading a cause.
13) Indian NGO receives first-ever FIFA Diversity Award.
  • Indian NGO Slum Soccer has been awarded the inaugural FIFA Diversity Award, which recognizes outstanding organizations, group initiatives, and personalities who stand up for diversity and inspire unity, solidarity and equality among people.
  • The other finalists for the award were International Gay & Lesbian Football Association and England`s Kick It Out.

14) Uttam Singh to be honoured with Lata Mangeshkar Award for Lifetime Achievement.

  • Veteran music director and violinist Uttam Singh was named for the 2016 Lata Mangeshkar Award for Lifetime Achievement of the Maharashtra Government.
  • The award carries a citation, a trophy and 500000 rupees in cash.
 
15) Paytm Founder named `Best Businessman` at GQ Awards.
  • Online payments and m-commerce platform Paytm`s Founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma have been named the `Best Businessman` at the annual `GQ Men of the Year Awards 2016`. 
  • Sharma is the first Indian startup entrepreneur to be on the list.
