1) Nagaland Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang received `Pangkor Dialogue Award 2016` in Malaysia.

  • Nagaland Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang has received `Pangkor Dialogue Award 2016` in Malaysia for the efforts made by the people of the state for environmental preservation and promotion. He was awarded by the organisers- Institute DarulRudzuan and Malaysian government.
2) He appealed to the people of Nagaland to continue environmental preservation and development.
  • Mr. Zeliang told that the people of Naga should cooperate with the government to undertake mass tree plantation every year and preserve natural flora and fauna.
  • The Woman Who Left named best film at Venice Film Fest.
  • Filipino drama film `The Woman Who Left`, directed by Lav Diaz won the top `Golden Lion` award for the best film at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival which ended.
  • Oscar Martínez won the `Best Actor` award for the film `The Distinguished Citizen`, while Emma Stone was named the `Best Actress` for the film `La La Land`.
3) Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Awards presented.
  • The five-day-long 22nd Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award Festival concluded at the Rabindra Mandap auditorium with the presentation of the prestigious awards named after the legendary Odissi artists.
  • The Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award 2016 for lifetime achievement was presented to Jharana Das (Cinema) and Guru Kishore Kumar Mohanty (Odissi). 
  • Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Yuva Prativa Samman 2016 for exceptional diligence and accomplishment was awarded to Rajib Bhattacharya (Odissi), Madhusmita Mohanty (Odissi), P. Praveen Kumar (Bharatanatyam) and Rupak Kumar Parida (Odissi vocal).
4) Subramanian Swamy was awarded `Tamil Ratna` in US.
  • BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has been honoured with `Tamil Ratna` award by a body of Tamil Diaspora in New York for fighting corruption and working for more transparency in the functioning of the government.
  • The America Tamil Sangam awarded the ‘Tamil Ratna’ to the senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP.
5) Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to be awarded by Jewish rights group.
  • Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will be honoured with a humanitarian award by a prominent Jewish human rights organization for prooting human dignity, interfaith relations and tolerance among people.
  • The Art of Living founder will be conferred with Simon Wiesenthal Centre’s highest honour ‘the Simon Wiesenthal Humanitarian Laureate’ at a ceremony in New Delhi.

 

6) Mumbai-based writer wins FON South Asia Short Story Award.

  • Writer Meghan Pant will be honoured with Kumaon Literary Festival`s FON (Fellows of Nature) South Asia Short Story Award in Nature writing for her short story "People of the Sun``. 
  • The annual travelling literary festival gives this award in partnership with the French Institute of India and Wildlife Trust of Indiato "revive nature writing and bring the spotlight on critical environment issues like climate change through this form of literature``.
7) Indian-American physician to receive National Humanities Medal.
  • Indian-American physician-author Abraham Verghese, whose work has emphasized empathy in medicine, has been selected for the prestigious 2015 National Humanities Medal, the White House has announced.
  • US President Barack Obama would confer the honour upon Verghese, along with 11 others, and the recipients of 2015 National Medal of Arts at ceremony.
8) Award for KVGB insurance effort.
  • Dharwad-headquartered Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank has bagged four awards for inclusive insurance for 2016 from Skoch Group. 
  • The bank, which operates in nine districts of Karnataka covering 57 taluks, has brought 28 lakh people under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojna, PM Suraksha Bima Yojna and PM Jan Dhan Yojna.
9) Indian-American Dinesh Bharadia wins 2016 Marconi Society Paul Baran Young Scholar Award.
  • India-born researcher Dinesh Bharadia was chosen for the prestigious Marconi Society Paul Baran Young Scholar Award.
  • Bharadia was chosen for his contribution to send and receive radio (wireless) signals, including mobile telephony and data on the same channel. 
  • His research disproved a 150-years long assumption that it is not possible for a radio to receive and transmit on the same frequency band because of the interference that results.
  • Bharadia will receive the award at a ceremony in Mountain View, California, on 2 November 2016.

10) Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma conferred with Arjuna Award.

  • Sports Minister Vijay Goel conferred Arjuna Awards on cricketers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane at a function in New Delhi. Sharma was given the award for 2015 and Rahane for 2016.
  • Earlier, the two cricketers could not receive the awards from the President Pranab Mukherjee as they were participating in international tournaments.
11) Ujjivan bags award for inclusive insurance.
  • Ujjivan Financial Services Ltd, a microfinance institution, has won the Platinum Award for Inclusive Insurance at the SKOCH Insurance Awards 2016.
  • The award was given to Ujjivan for conceptualising and implementing a comprehensive end-to-end whole nine yards’ project to create awareness and achieve an 100 per cent insurance penetration among the economically active and financially weaker segments of its customer base, who are normally deprived of insurance protection.
12) WB to confer `Banga Bibhushan` to Lata Mangeshkar.
  • To honour legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar`s contributions to Bengali songs, the West Bengal government will confer `Banga Bibhushan` on her.
  • The award will be conferred to Mangeshkar after the Durga Puja, the singer has agreed to accept the award.
13) Ramakrishna ``Bajaj Memorial Global Award``.
  • Ramakrishna ``Bajaj Memorial Global Award`` would be presented to Anshu Gupta, Founder Director of Goonj, an NGO of Delhi, for his outstanding contribution in promoting the dignity of poor.
  • Venki Ramakrishnan, an India-born Nobel Prize winning scientist, will be presented the Priyadarshini Academy Global Award.
  • Katrina Kaif would be presented ``Smita Patil Memorial Award for Best Actor`` (part of the overall awards), while Juhi Chawla would be honoured for her outstanding role in promoting social causes.
14) Indian-origin peer wins `Lifetime Achievement Award`.
  • Lord Narendra Babubhai Patel was given the `Lifetime Achievement Award` during the Asian Achievers Awards for his work in the medical profession and public life in Britain over the years.
  • Other winners included Mr. Selva Pankaj, CEO of Regent Group - a London-based education skills and training development group; Ms. Manjit Gill, CEO of Binti, a social enterprise that works for women`s causes in India and Africa; and Paralympian Mr. Ryan Raghoo, a long jumper who suffers from cerebral palsy.
15) Malayalam critic M. Leelavathy chosen for N. Mohanan Suvarna Mudra Award 2016.
  • Eminent Malayalam critic and academician M. Leelavathy was chosen for the prestigious N. Mohanan Suvarna Mudra Award 2016, instituted in memory of well-known short story writer N. Mohanan.
  • An expert panel comprising journalists M.G. Radhakrishnan and M. Saritha Varma and Athmaraman, selected Leelavathy for the biennial award considering her contributions to Malayalam language and literature.
