1) Pratap Bhanu Mehta resigns from NMML body.

  • Eminent academic Pratap Bhanu Mehta has resigned from the executive council of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML).
  • He resigned over his purported disagreement with the recommendation of the search and selection committee, of which he was a member, regarding the premier institution’s next director. 
2) Court of Arbitration for Sport suspends wrestler Narsingh Yadav for four years.
  • The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) situated in Lausanne, Switzerland, banned wrestler Narsingh Yadav for four years following an appeal by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
  • The CAS also ruled to disqualify all the competitive results obtained by Narsingh from 25 June 2016.
  • The CAS panel further stated that there was no evidence to accept his claim that his food/ drink was spiked.
  • Yadav, whose suspension begins immediately, will not be able to participate at the Rio 2016 Olympics. He was scheduled to commence his campaign against Zelimkhan Khadjiev of France in the 74 category.

3) Indian-American inducted in Texas Women`s Hall of Fame.

  • Renu Khator, Indian-American woman academic, will be inducted into the Texas Women`s Hall of Fame for making significant contribution for the benefit of the US` second largest state.
  • Khator, is currently Chancellor and President of the prestigious University of Houston (UH).
  • Khator, the first Indian-American to lead a major research university in the US, is also the president of University of Houston`s main campus.
4) Yogeshwar Sangwan concurrently accredited as the Ambassador of India to Georgia.
  • Shri Yogeshwar Sangwan, presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Armenia, has been concurrently accredited as the Ambassador of India to Georgia, with residence in Yerevan (Armenia).
  • Georgia is a country in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. 
  • Located at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, it is bounded to the west by the Black Sea, to the north by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan.

5) Vistara appoints Deepika Padukone as brand ambassador.

  • Vistara, is an Indian domestic airline based in Gurgaon has announced that Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone will be their new brand ambassador.
  • The airline will launch a new campaign featuring Deepika they will be broadcast on TV channels across India starting August 22, 2016.
  • Through this campaign, Vistara wishes to reach out to its core audience of corporate and frequent flyers, who value a seamless, reliable, and consistent service experience above everything else, and are willing to pay a reasonable premium for the unique offerings provided by a world-class full service airline.
  • With this initiative, the airline also intends to make brand Vistara a household name just like its parent company brands.
6) Jagdish Mukhi has sworn in as Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Senior BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi was sworn in as the 12th Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • He was administered the oath of office and oath of secrecy by Justice Girish Chandra Gupta, acting chief justice of Calcutta High Court.
  • Mukhi Succeeded Lt General A.K. Singh (Retd) who was appointed in July 2013. Earlier, he had been a minister and Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly in the past. 
7) Ashok Chawla to take over as YES Bank non-executive chairman.
  • Former Competition Commission of India (CCI) head Ashok Chawla will take over as Non-Executive Part-time Chairman of YES Bank from October as the lender has received approval from the Reserve Bank for this appointment.
  • Yes Bank is India`s fifth largest private sector Bank, co-founded by Rana Kapoor in 2004. 
  • Yes Bank is the only Greenfield Bank licence awarded by the RBI in the last two decades. 
  • Yes Bank is a ``Full Service Commercial Bank``, and has steadily built a Corporate, Retail & SME Banking franchise, Financial Markets, Investment Banking, Corporate Finance, Branch Banking, Business and Transaction Banking, and Wealth Management business lines across the country.
