1) National Sports Awards 2016 announced.

  • The Union Government announced the National Sports Awards. Olympic Medalists P.V. Sindhu and Sakshi Malik will get Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards.
  • Shooter Jitu Rai and Gymnast Dipa Karmakar have also been selected for the top national sports award.
  • National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports.
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna:
  • Four sports person from different discipline of sports were chosen for the award and they are P.V. Sindhu for Badminton, Dipa Karmakar for Gymnastics, Jitu Rai for Shooting and Sakshi Malik for Wrestling.
  • The award is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years.
Dronacharya Awards:
  1. Six sports coaches will be honoured with Dronacharya Awards and they are Nagapuri Ramesh for Athletics, Sagar Mal Dhayal for Boxing, Raj Kumar Sharma for Cricket, Bishweshwar Nandi for Gymnastics, S. Pradeep Kumar for Swimming (Lifetime) and Mahabir Singh for Wrestling (Lifetime).
  2. Dipa Karmakar`s coach Bishweshwar Nandi will receive the award for Gymnastics.
  3. The award is conferred on coaches for producing medal winners at prestigious international sports events.
2) Kamal Haasan has chosen for France’s Chevalier de L’Ordre Arts et Lettres.
  • The Minister of Culture and Communication, France, selected Kamal Haasan for the Chevalier de l`Ordre des Arts et Lettres (Knight in the National Order Arts and Letters).
  • The distinction is in recognition of his high level of artistic excellence and his distinguished career achievements.
  • Haasan is the second Tamil star after thespian Sivaji Ganesan to be honored with the prestigious French award.

 

3) 2 Indian-American women named White House fellows.

  • Two Indian-American women have been selected for the prestigious White House Fellow programme that offers firsthand experience of working at the highest levels of the US federal government. 
  • Astrophysicist Anjali Tripathi from California and physician Tina R Shah from Chicago are among the 16 White House Fellows appointed from across the nation for the year 2016-17. 
  • Shah is a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician-scientist focused on transforming healthcare delivery for patients with chronic diseases.
  • She recently completed her clinical fellowship at the University of Chicago (UC), where she redesigned the care cycle for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), dramatically reducing hospital readmissions.
4) Cristiano Ronaldo wins UEFA Best Player in Europe award.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo won the UEFA Best Player in Europe award for 2015-16. He won the award for the second time in three years.
  • Ronaldo defeated Antoine Griezmann and Gareth Bale to bag the honours.
  • Ada Hegerberg was voted the winner of the UEFA Best Women`s Player in Europe Award for 2015-16 ahead of Amandine Henry and Dzsenifer Marozsan.
  • In 2014-15, Barcelona`s Lionel Messi was the winner of the award. Ronaldo joins Messi as the only player to win the award twice.
  • On the other hand, Messi won the UEFA Goal of the Season award for 2015-16.
5) G. Satheesh Reddy conferred first IEI-IEEE Award.
  • G. Satheesh Reddy, Indian aerospace scientist, was conferred the first IEI-IEEE Award for engineering excellence 2015.
  • The award is in recognition of Reddy’s significant national contributions towards missiles and aerospace technologies.
  • The award was presented by the the Institution of Engineers (India) – Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Award for Engineering Excellence - 2016. 
  • It was presented during the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ 50th anniversary.

6) Telangana Aarogyasri Trust bags FICCI award.

  • The GPS enabled mobile app of the Telangana Aarogyasri Healthcare Trust bagged this year’s Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI)’s healthcare excellence award.
  • It is the second award for the app having secured the ‘Elite Smart Healthcare Conclave’ for being the most important mobile app in the nation.
  • Aarogyasri CEO Dr. M. Chandrasekhar will be receiving the award from Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda at a function to be held in Delhi.
  • The app was made by the project monitoring unit of the Trust which enables any patient to locate the network hospital within 10 km radius through a map. It will also show the nearest route to the hospitals networked under Healthcare Trust. This has been of much help during emergencies and road accidents.
7) Athlete Lalita Babar, chessplayer Gagare to get SJAM awards.
  • Maharashtra’s sixth Chess GM Shardul Gagare, and steeplechase specialist Lalita Babar, who finished a creditable 10th in the Rio Olympics, have been chosen for the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai’s (SJAM) Golden Jubilee Annual Awards 2016.
  • Ahmedanagar-based Gagare will receive the Sportsman of the year award and the Satara-based Lalita, the Sportswoman of the year award. 
  • The awards presentation is to be held here on September 3 in which former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan would be chief guest and present the trophies and certificates.
8) Padma Sachdev gets Saraswati Samman for year 2015.
  • Eminent author Padma Sachdev was awarded the prestigious Saraswati Samman for the year 2015 for her autobiography `Chitt-Chete` written in Dogri language. She was felicitated by Delhi`s Lt Governor Najeeb Jung in New Delhi.
  • The poet and novelist`s autobiography, published in 2007, was shortlisted from 22 works written in as many languages published between 2005 and 2014.
9) Four athletes get Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee conferred the country`s highest sporting honour Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award to Rio medalists PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik along with gymnast Dipa Karmakar and ace shooter Jitu Rai.
  • The prestigious award is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years. 
  • This is for the first time that the award has been conferred on four athletes. 
  • The specially organised ceremony was held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on the occasion of National Sports Day, celebrated in dedication to the great hockey player Dhyan Chand.
