1) A.R. Rahman to pay tribute to late singer M.S. Subbulakshmi at UN General Assembly.

  • A.R. Rahman is honoured and humbled to have got the opportunity to pay a musical tribute to legendary Carnatic vocalist, late MS Subbulakshmi, at the United Nations on India’s 70th Independence Day.
  • The concert aims to commemorate the birth centenary of the legendary Carnatic music vocalist and Bharat Ratna awardee. The gala musical evening also coincides with the completion of 50 years of Subbulakshmi’s performance in the General Assembly hall in 1966.

 

2) IISc bags maximum number of INSA Medals for Young Scientists.

  • The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore had the lion’s share of medals with five of its faculty members being awarded the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Medal for Young Scientists 2016, making it the institute with more awardees than any other.
  • The winners from IISc this year are: Prabeer Barpanda, Sai Siva Gorthi, Praveen Kumar, Anshu Pandey and Chandan Saha.
  • The INSA annually presents the Young Scientist Award to distinguish young scientists who have made notable research contributions in science and technology. Started in 1974, about 760 scientists have been recognized so far. A maximum of 30 awards are given each year.
