1) Kevin Turner resigns as Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft.

  • Kevin Turner resigned as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Microsoft with effect from 31 July 2016.
  • Being the COO, Turner was handling Microsoft`s enormous sales operations. He had been at Microsoft for 11 years.
  • Turner would now be joining Citadel Securities as Chief Executive Officer.
About Kevin Turner:
  1. In his 11 years of service as Chief Operating Officer, Turner has driven a strong track record of results, execution excellence and improved efficiency, while also driving customer satisfaction.
  2. Prior to his role at Microsoft, Turner spent nearly 20 years at Wal-Mart Stores, where he rose through the ranks and was the youngest corporate officer ever at age 29.
  3. He held various leadership positions at Wal-Mart, including Chief Information Officer for Wal-Mart Stores.
  4. He had also served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of SAM’S CLUB, a division of Wal-Mart Stores.

2) NCP leader Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar re-elected as Maharashtra Council Chairman.

  • Current Chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Council and NCP leader, Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar was re-elected unopposed as the chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Council ,during a special one-day session convened at the VidhanBhavan.
  • The newly appointed council of ministers was sworn-in at this session and later Chief Minister DevendraFadnavis introduced the new faces to the house.
  • The post of Deputy Chairman of the House is lying vacant, election for which was not held.
3) Maria Grazia Chiuri named Dior’s new creative director.
  • Luxury goods maker Christian Dior named Maria GraziaChiuri as its new creative director, making her the first woman to take up the role at the French fashion label.
  • Chiuri, who was formerly co-creative director at the Italian clothing brand Valentino, will feature her first collection for Christian Dior in Paris from September.
4) SriniGopalan quits BhartiAirtel and going to join Deutsche Telekom.
  • Consumer business director of Bharti Airtel Mr. SriniGopalan has quit the company and is all set to join Deutsche Telekom from October 1st as a member of new board management for Europe business.
  • In BhartiAirtel, Gopalan was the in charge of increasing data usage by Bharti’s subscribers, where he also led the rolling out of app services including Wynk.
  • He had joined Bharti in 2013 from Vodafone UK, where he was working as the director for consumer business.

 

5) Sushila Karki confirmed as Nepal`s first woman Chief Justice.

  • Nepal’s Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) unanimously endorsed Sushila Karki as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
  • With this, Karki has become the first woman to lead Nepal’s judiciary. She will be appointed to the post by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.
About Sushila Karki:
  1. Sushila Karki obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Mahendra Morang Campus, Biratnagar in 1972.
  2. In 1975, she completed her Masters Degree in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.
  3. She was appointed the Ad-Hoc Justice at the Supreme Court on 22 January 2009.
  4. The Judicial Council on 10 April 2016 had recommended her for the top judicial post. However, her appointment was pending owing to delay in formation of the PHSC.
  5. She has been taking charge of the Supreme Court as the Acting Chief Justice since her predecessor Kalyan Shrestha retired on 14 April 2016.
6) Shinzo Abe`s party attains majority in Upper House of National Diet.
  • Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its allies claimed victory in an election for the upper house of parliament National Diet.
  • Voting took place on 10 July 2016 for 121 seats of upper house.
  • Prime Minister Shinzo Abe`s ruling coalition already enjoys a two-thirds majority in the lower house and they needed a super majority in the House of Councilors to start a parliamentary motion for changing the constitution.
  • This win in the upper house will allow Abe to revise Japan’s pacifist constitution that bars its military from participating in joint military endeavors abroad.
  • Article 9 of the Constitution of Japan outlaws war as a means to settle international disputes involving the state.
7) K.V.R. Murthy new chairman-cum-MD at Jute Corp of India.
  • K.V.R. Murthy has taken over as chairman-cum-managing director of the Jute Corporation of India Limited.
  • His appointment is for a period of five years or till the date of his superannuation
  • The Jute Corporation of India Ltd. (JCI) is based in Kolkata, is an agency of the government of India that assists jute cultivators in states where this crop is grown, providing minimum price support.
8) Six more Indians qualify for Rio Olympics.
  • Six Indians 2016 qualified for the Rio Olympics. These are Renjith Maheswary, Anirban Lahiri, Dharambir Singh, Jinson Johnson, Shiv Shankar Prasad Chawrasia and Aditi Ashok. Rio Olympics will be held from 5 August to 21 August 2016.
Renjith Maheswary:
  1. The triple jumper leaped with a national record of 17.30 meters bettering the Rio qualification mark of 16.85 metres at the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru.
Dharambir Singh:
  1. He in 200 meter race shattered national records by clocking 20.45 seconds to make the cut for Rio and become the first Indian to run in an Olympics 200m race after 36 years.
Jinson Johnson:
  1. He ran the second fastest ever 800 metres race to qualify.
  2. Anirban Lahiri, Shiv Shankar Prasad Chawrasia and Aditi Ashok: They qualified for Rio after the crossing the mark of rank 60 in world rankings.

 

9) Ashok Patnaik appointed as CEO of NATGRID.

  • The Union Government appointed Ashok Patnaik as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), one of the most ambitious intelligence projects that failed to take off during United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rule.
  • Patnaik is currently serving as Additional Director in the Intelligence Bureau and he will continue to hold this post till his superannuation in 2018.
  • Patnaik is a 1983-batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre.
10) Boris Johnson appointed Britain’s foreign minister.
  • Boris Johnson, the former London mayor and ``Leave`` campaign figurehead in Britain’s EU referendum, was appointed foreign secretary in new Prime Minister Theresa May’s government.
  • Johnson, considered by many to be a strong supporter of Israel’s right-wing government, had been widely expected to stand for the leadership of the governing Conservative Party after ``Remain`` campaign leader David Cameron announced his resignation as prime minister in the wake of the referendum.
  • Johnson was the second appointment in May’s new government, after she shifted Philip Hammond from the Foreign Office post to become Britain’s new finance minister.
11) Sheila Dikshit is Congress` CM candidate for Uttar Pradesh polls.
  • Sheila Dikshit was announced as the Chief Ministerial candidate from the Congress party for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls due next year.
  • Making the announcement, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad added that Sanjay Singh will lead the election campaign committee.
  • Notably, Dikshit had previously served three terms as Delhi`s Chief Minister from 1998 to 2013.
