1) Vijay Mallya declared as Proclaimed Offender by Money Laundering Court.

  • Businessman Vijay Mallya was declared as a Proclaimed Offender by a special court for the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Mumbai in a loan diversion case. The court issued proclamation under Section 82 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) against Vijay Mallya.
  • The move came after the Enforcement Directorate (ED), an investigation agency under the Union Finance Ministry filed a petition over a case where Mallya is suspected to have diverted a 430 crore rupees loan given by IDBI Bank Ltd to his Kingfisher Airlines Ltd.
  • The ED requested the court to issue an order under Section 82 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and term Mallya a proclaimed offender, citing multiple arrest warrants pending against Mallya including a non-bailable warrant (NBW) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.
  • Mallya left the country on 2 March 2016 for London on a diplomatic passport. The ED now plans to send the court order to the UK authorities to start on the process of deportation. The directorate has identified around 4000 crore rupees worth of assets owned by Mallya.

2) Gunit Chadha resigns as CEO of Deutsche Bank Asia Pacific Region.

  • Gunit Chadha resigned as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Asia Pacific region of Deutsche Bank AG.
  • Chadha joined Deutsche Bank in 2003 as the CEO for the global lender’s India business.
  • In 2012, he was elevated to co-CEO for its Asia Pacific business and later in October 2015 was appointed as CEO for the Asia Pacific.
  • Under Chadha’s leadership, Deutsche Bank had started its investment banking, retail banking and institutional broking business in India.
  • Prior to Deutsche Bank, he was CEO of IDBI Bank Ltd.
3) Hollywood actor Anne Hathaway appointed as UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.
  • The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women appointed Anne Hathaway as global Goodwill Ambassador.
  • The Academy Award-winning actor will advocate for the adoption and implementation of policies worldwide to bring change at both government and corporate levels.
  • Hathaway has previously served as an advocate for Nike Foundation. She travelled to Kenya and Ethiopia to raise awareness on child marriage.
 
4) Indian-origin Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir nominated as US Ambassador to Malaysia.
  • Indian-origin diplomat Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir was nominated as the next American Ambassador to Malaysia by US President Barack Obama.
  • He will replace Joseph Y Yun, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service.

  1. Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir served as the Executive Assistant to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 2011 to 2015.
  2. She served as the US Consul General in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom from 2009 to 2011.
  3. She previously worked in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs as the Director of the Office of Maritime Southeast Asia from 2007 to 2009.
  4. From 2001 to 2005, Lakhdhir was a Political Officer at the US Embassy in Beijing, China.
  5. From 1998 to 2000, Lakhdhir was Deputy Coordinator of the Taiwan Coordination Staff in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
  6. She received a BA from Harvard College and an MS from the National War College. 

5)Soram Sunil sworn-in as first mayor of Imphal.

  • Congress councillor Soram Sunil was sworn in as the first mayor of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.
  • Sunil was elected unanimously to the Imphal Municipal Corporation despite objection by the opposition BJP, who boycotted the election.
  • With protests over the implementation of the Inner Line Permit in Manipur, the election was conducted amidst heavy security deployment.

6) India gets first women fighter pilots; Commissioned 3 pilots in Batch-1.

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) commissioned first three women fighter pilots. The batch of pilots was inducted at the Combined Graduation Parade at Air Force Academy, Dundigal near Hyderabad.
  • With this, India joined the select few nations in the world that have women fighter pilots in their Air Forces.

The first three women fighter pilots of India are:

  1. Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi
  2. Flying Officer Bhawana Kanth
  3. Flying Officer Mohana Singh
  4. They will get to fly fighter jets like the Sukhoi and Tejas only in 2017 after their Stage III training at Bidar in Karnataka in 2017.
  5. In October 2015, the Union Ministry of Defence approved the induction of women into the combat stream of Indian Air Force (IAF) on an experimental basis for five years.

7) Flipkart rehires Tiger Global`s Krishnamurthy.

  • Tiger Global`s Managing Director Kalyan Krishnamurthy has joined Flipkart in his earlier role as the Head of Categories.
  • Krishnamurthy will directly report to Flipkart`s CEO Binny Bansal.
  • During his nearly two-year stint at Flipkart starting in early 2013, Krishnamurthy served as the Head of Categories and the interim Chief Financial Officer.
