1) Manoj Bajpayee.
  • Renowned actor Manoj Bajpayee will be going to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the movie Aligarh.
  • The actor will receive the award in the best actor category of Critics Choice. The award will be presented on 1st of May, 2016.
  • The movie `Aligarh` is a biographical drama directed by Hansal Mehta and the actor Manoj Bajpayee has played a role of Professor `Ramchandra Siras` in it.
2) Salman Khan.
  • Bollywood actor Salman Khan was named as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent for the Olympics to be held in August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • This is the first time when a Bollywood superstar has been chosen as a goodwill ambassador for the Indian contingent at the Olympics.
  • He was chosen by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) from a list of two to three candidates which also included Shah Rukh Khan and veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan.
  • IOA has chosen Salman Khan as he is considered to be more connected with the youth and sportspersons and also is considered as a youth icon for bodybuilding fans across the country.
3) Top gay rights activist Xulhaz Mannan murdered in Bangladesh.
  • A top gay rights activist and editor at the country’s (Bangladesh) only LGBT magazine is one of two people who have been hacked to death in Dhaka.
  • The US ambassador to Bangladesh condemned the killing of Xulhaz Mannan, who also worked at the US embassy. Another person was also injured when the attackers entered a Dhaka flat.
  • Since February 2015 suspected militants have killed several secular or atheist writers and members of religious minority groups. The two men were murdered two days after a university teacher was hacked to death by suspected Islamist militants. So-called Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility - but the Bangladeshi government insists there is no IS presence in the country.

 

4) Felix Sanchez retired.
  • Two-time Olympic 400 meter hurdles gold medalist champion Felix Sanchez announced his retirement.
  • Sanchez who made his first Olympic team in 2000 won his first gold in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and second at the 2012 Summer Games in London. He also owns two gold medals from the 2001 and 2003 world championships.
  • His personal best of 47.25 puts him as the eighth best of all-time. Between 2001 and 2004, he won 43 consecutive races and has run 48 races under 48.50.
  • The hurdler, known as Super Sanchez, made his final global championship appearance with a fifth place finish at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow. His final race was a fifth place finish at the NACAC Championships in 2015.
5) Jayasurya recalled as Sri Lanka`s cricket chief selector.
  • Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced appointment of Sanath Jayasuriya as chief selector of the Sri Lankan Cricket team.
  • Jayasuriya is back as the chief selector for the team, after a year when he stepped down from the role. Earlier, he served as the chief selector from January 2013 to March 2015.
  • Jayasuriya-led committee will succeed the Aravinda de Silva led committee.
  • The new four member selection panel will take office on 1 May 2016 and will serve for two years and will comprise of former wicketkeeper-batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana, former fast bowler Eric Upashantha and former off spinner Ranjith Madurasinghe.
  • During Jayasuriya’s previous tenure, Sri Lanka won a World T20 and a Test series in England, both in 2014, before exiting the 2015 World Cup in the quarter-finals.

 

6) Charles Borromeo resigned from Tata Steel Sports Department.
  • Asian Games gold medallist Charles Borromeo, head of the Tata Steel sports department, has resigned.
  • The resignation came after the vigilance department officials of the company questioned him in connection with alleged irregularities in tender process of synthetic track laying at the JRD Tata Sports complex.
About Charles Borromeo
  1. Borromeo, won a gold medal of 800 m at the 1982 Asian Games held in Delhi and also a part of Indian Olympic contingent that took place at Los Angeles in 1984.
  2. He joined Tata Steel as sports assistant in 1979 and participated in a number of track and field meets.
  3. He won bronze medal at the Peking International Games in China and toured Germany representing the Indian athletic team.
  4. Tata honored him as the Best Sportsman in 1984. He also represented India at a number of track and field meets around the world, including Japan and China, where he again won gold medals.
  5. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1982 and the Padma Shri in 1984.
7) Allan Donald is Australian bowling coach ahead of Sri Lanka cricket tour.
  • Cricket Australia has confirmed former South Africa paceman Allan Donald as the bowling coach for Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka.
  • Donald will replace former mentor Craig McDermott on a short-term role, while Stuart Law will replace Greg Blewett as batting coach for the tour.
  • Donald has previously coached with England, New Zealand, and South Africa.

  1. Allan Anthony Donald is a former South African cricketer and one of their most successful pace bowlers.
  2. He made his Test debut on 18 April 1992 in South Africa`s first test since their return to world sport.
  3. He was one of the best fast bowlers ever seen in Test cricket, reaching the top of the ICC Test rankings in 1998.
  4. He was South Africa`s record wicket-taker with 330 Test wickets at an average of 22.25, and claimed 272 One Day International wickets at an average of 21.78.
8) Abhinav Bindra as India`s Goodwill Ambassador.
  • Abhinav Bindra accepted the offer of the Indian Olympic Association to become India`s Goodwill Ambassador for the Rio Olympics.
  • Abhinav Bindra joins Salman Khan as India`s Goodwill Ambassador.

  1. Abhinav Singh Bindra (born 28 September 1982, in Dehradun) is an Indian shooter and is a World and Olympic champion in the 10 m Air Rifle event.
  2. By winning the gold in the 10 m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games.
  3. He is the first and only Indian to have held both the World and Olympic titles at the same time, a feat he accomplished by capturing the Gold Medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, after having won the gold at the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships.
  4. He also won Gold Medal in 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow.
  5. He received Arjuna award (2000), Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (2001), Padma Bhushan (2009), Honorary lieutenant colonel by Indian Territorial Army (2011).
