1) Mary Kom named AIBA ambassador for Women’s World Championship.
  • Iconic Indian woman boxer M.C. Mary Kom honour to her list of accolades as she was named one of the eight ambassadors for the upcoming World Championships by the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
  • An elated Mary Kom (51 kg), who has five World Championship gold medals to her credit, she feels honoured by the AIBA’s gesture.
  • Mary Kom is aiming to secure her second successive Olympic appearance through the world event which is scheduled from May 19 to 27 in Astana, Kazakhstan.
  • The AIBA-appointed ambassadors for the World Championship also include Nicola Adams of Great Britain, Team USA’s light flyweight Marlen Esparza, Adriana Arauja from host country of this year’s Olympic Games Brazil, Bulgaria’s Stanimira Petrova and Morocco’s Khadija Mardi.
  • The female officials chosen to be ambassadors are Algerian Kheira Siki Yakoub and Canada’s Jennifer Huggins.
 
2) T.N. Ninan gets Mumbai Press Club`s lifetime achievement award.
  • The Mumbai Press Club selected T.N. Ninan, Chairman and Editorial Director of Business Standard, for this year`s `RedInk Award for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism`.
  • The award will be presented to Ninan by the Governor of Maharashtra C. Vidyasagar Rao in New Delhi.
  • The `RedInk Journalist of the Year` Award would be given to NDTV India`s senior Executive Editor Ravish Kumar for his consistent and good reporting on politics and issues that concern the common man.
  • The RedInk Awards for Excellence in Journalism are given in 10 categories for meritorious work in TV, print and digital formats. The categories are Politics, Crime, Health & Wellness, Business, Environment, Human Rights, Photography, Science & Innovation, Entertainment & Lifestyle and Sports.
  • The Award recognises Ninan`s extensive contribution to business journalism through good editorial leadership which he provided over the years to a host of publications.

 

3) Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath retires from ODIs and T20s.

  • Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath has retired from 50-over and Twenty20 internationals in order to carry on playing Test matches.
  • The 38-year-old took 74 wickets in 71 one-day internationals and another 18 in 17 T20 matches for the island nation, shouldered the burden of the slow bowling attack following the retirement of spin great Muttiah Muralitharan in 2011.
  • Arguably the left-arm spinner’s best effort came at the 2014 World Twenty20, where he took five wickets for just three runs as Sri Lanka successfully defended a 120-run target in a must-win match against New Zealand en route to the title
  • He has the record of best bowling figures in Tests by a left-arm spinner.
  • In April 2016, Herath announced his retirement from One Day International and Twenty20 International cricket to focus on Test cricket.

4) Laureus World Sports Awards 2016.

  • Novak Djokovic pipped the likes of Usain Bolt and Lionel Messi to win the ‘Sportsman of the Year’ trophy for a third time, while Serena Williams clinched the top honour in the women’s category at the Laureus World Awards in Berlin.
  • Djokovic, who won this award in 2012 and 15, walked away with it for a second successive time after clinching three Grand Slams – Australian, Wimbledon and US Open – last year.
  • He was also the finalist in the French Open.
  • Messi, who had been nominated for a fifth time, once again lost out on the top award.
  • American golf star Jordan Spieth, who was also nominated in the ‘Sportsman of the Year’ category, won the ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ award.
  • The 21-year-old Spieth is the reigning world No.1, who has already won the Masters and the US Open.
 

 

5) Zee Media Corp Group CEO Bhaskar Das quits.

  • Zee Media Corporation Group CEO - News Cluster Bhaskar Das has quit following his transfer to another Essel Group entity.
  • Bhaskar Das, Group CEO - News Cluster of the company has been transferred to another entity forming part of Essel Group.
  • Das, who was president of media group Bennett, Coleman and Co. Ltd (BCCL), had joined Subhash Chandra-led Essel Group as chief executive officer (CEO). He was given the responsibility of driving the group`s news business, including the digital properties.
  • Zee Media Corporation is one of the largest news networks in the country with 10 news channels in six different languages, Mumbai edition of DNA newspaper and digital properties like zeenews.Com and dnaindia.Com.

6) Chadian President Idriss Deby wins fifth term.

  • Chad’s incumbent President, Idriss Deby (63) has won a fifth term in office in a lopsided first-round victory.
  • Idriss Deby of Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) party secured the 61.56% of the vote in the first-round runoff.
  • For the first time, he became President of Chad, a central African country in 1990 after overthrowing President Hissène Habré in a military coup. Earlier he had won the elections in 1996 and 2001 and again in 2006 and 2011 after 2 term limits of President were eliminated.
  • Currently he is also Chairperson of the African Union (AU) and was elected by the Assembly of Heads of State of AU in January 2016 for one year term.

7) Mary Kom.

  • Mary kom legendary boxer and Olympic bronze medallist was nominated by president Pranab Mukherjee to Rajya Sabha.
  • She belongs to the Sino-Tibetan speaking Kom tribe of Manipur. She is five-time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.
  • In 2014, she became the first Indian woman boxer to get a gold medal in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

8) Narendra Jadhav.

  • Narendra jadav a removed economist was nominated by President Pranab Mukherjee to Rajya Sabha.
  • He is renowned economist and former member of the erstwhile National Advisory Council (2010-14) and Planning Commission (2009-14).
  • He is also the former vice-chancellor of Pune University.

9) Suresh Gopi.

  • Suresh Gopi was nominated by President Pranab Mukherjee to Rajya Sabha.
  • He is Malayalam actor and had acted in over 200 films. He is a winner of the National Film Award and Filmfare Award.

10) Swapan Dasgupta.

  • Swapan Dasgupta was nominated by President Pranab Mukherjee to Rajya Sabha.
  • He is journalist by profession. He had worked at senior editorial positions in various publications including The Indian Express, India Today and The Times of India.

11) Subramanian Swamy.

  • Subramanian Swamy was nominated by President Pranab Mukherjee to Rajya Sabha.
  • He is BJP leader and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1977, 1980 and 1988, and to the Rajya Sabha in 1974 and 1998.

12) Navjot Singh Sidhu.

  • He is cricketer-turned-politician and former two time member of Lok Sabha He was nominated by President Pranab Mukherjee to Rajya Sabha.
