1) Mother Teresa conferred with Founders Award posthumously in UK.

  • Mother Teresa has been posthumously conferred with the UK’s prestigious Founders Award this year which is given to recognise and reward exemplary achievements of people within the global Asian community.
  • The Founders Award at the 6th Asian Awards takes place in the UK to recognise and reward exemplary achievement within the global Asian community across 14 categories that include business, philanthropy, entertainment, culture and sport.

2) Priyanka Chopra To Be Awarded With Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Award 2016.

  • Priyanka Chopra will be given Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation`s Best Actress of the Year award.
  • This would be Priyanka`s second award from the Foundation after she received her first award for Most Memorable Performance for 2011 film Saath Khoon Maaf.
  • The Dadasaheb Film Foundation will honour the actress with the Best Actress of the Year award on the occasion of 147th Dadasaheb Phalke Jayanti in Mumbai on April 24 2016.
     

3) Khadija Ismayilova selected for 2016 UNESCO/ Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.

  • Investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova of Azerbaijan on 8 April 2016 was chosen for the UNESCO or Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2016.
  • The Prize will be awarded during the celebration of World Press Freedom Day 3 May 2016 hosted by Finland.

About UNESCO/ Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize

  • The Prize was established by UNESCO’s Executive Board in 1997 to honour a person, organization or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and, or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, and especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger.
  • The prize includes 25000 US dollars cash Prize in honour of Guillermo Cano world press freedom prize.

4) Aishwarya Rai wins Global Indian of the Year award.

  • Aishwarya was honoured at NRI of the Year award.
  • Sania Mirza was also honoured at the NRI of the Year Award 2016.

About NRI of the Year Award

  1. These awards are conferred to salute the spirit of the globetrotting Indians who have resided in any of the four regions of Asia Pacific, America, middle East and UK.
  2. The 2014 and 2015 awards of global Indian of the year were conferred on Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan respectively.

5) Ex-army chief J.J. Singh gets highest French civilian honour.

  • New Delhi, Former army chief Gen. (retd) J.J. Singh was conferred with the highest French civilian distinction, Officer of the Legion of Honour.
  • Singh was conferred the honour by French Ambassador to India, Francois Richier.
  • In 2009, he was invited as the Guest of Honour for the French National Day military parade in Paris in which an Indian Army contingent took part for the first time.

6) Chawrasia named Asian Tour golfer of the month for March.

  • Indian golfer S.S.P. Chawrasia was honoured as the Hilton Asian Tour Golfer of the Month for March, thanks largely to his performance at the Hero Indian Open.
  • The victory was especially sweet for Chawrasia, who settled for second best on four occasions in the Indian Open before his triumph at the Delhi Golf Club.
     

7) Jammu-born poet Padma Sachdev gets Saraswati Samman.

  • Jammu-born poet and novelist Padma Sachdev has been chosen for the prestigious Saraswati Samman for the year 2015 for her autobiography written in Dogri language.
  • The 76-year-old writer`s autobiography `Chitt-Chete`, published in 2007, was selected for the 25th Saraswati Samman from among five works that were shortlisted from 22 works in as many languages.
  • Previous recipients of the Saraswati Samman include former Union Minister M. Veerappa Moily, S.L. Bhyrappa, K. Aiyappa Panickar, Vijay Tendulkar and Harivansh Rai Bachchan.
  • The award is given every year for an outstanding literary work written in any Indian language by an Indian citizen and published during last 10 years. It carries award money of Rs. 15 lakh.
  • She has been a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award in 1971 for her book of poetry ‘Meri Kavita Mere Geet’.

8) UNESCO/ Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2016 Received By Khadija Ismayilova.

  • Khadija Ismayilova, an investigative journalist from Azerbaijan, has been chosen to receive the 2016 UNESCO/ Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
  • An independent international jury of media professionals recommended Ismayilova in recognition of her outstanding contribution to press freedom in difficult circumstances.
  • Khadija Ismayilova highly deserves the Prize and I am happy to see that her courage and professionalism are recognized.
