1) Former Indian football team coach Syed Nayeemuddin to be conferred with Mohun Bagan Ratna.

  • Mohun Bagan announced that it will honour country’s only Dronacharya football coach Syed Nayeemuddin with the Mohun Bagan Ratna.
  • Nayeemuddin was chosen for the prestigious award for his overall contribution to the club and the country both as a player and as a coach.

About Syed Nayeemuddin

  1. Syed Nayeemuddin is an Indian football coach and former player.
  2. As a player, he captained the Indian national team that won a bronze medal at the 1970 Asian Games.
  3. He was appointed coach of India in 1997.
  4. He won the South Asian Football Federation Cup by beating the Maldives 5–1 and reached the semi-finals of the Nehru Cup for the first time.
  5. He is the only sports-person to win both the Arjuna and Dronacharya Awards for football.

2) Margaret Atwood awarded 2016 PEN Pinter Prize.

  • Canadian poet, novelist and environmental activist Margaret Atwood was awarded the 2016 PEN Pinter Prize.
  • Atwood will receive her award at a public event at the British Library on 13 October 2016.
  • Atwood was chosen by Judges Vicky Featherstone, Zia Haider Rahman, Peter Stothard, Antonia Fraser and President of English PEN and Chair of Judges, Maureen Freely.

About Margaret Atwood

  1. Margaret Atwood is a Canadian poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist, and environmental activist.
  2. She is also the inventor and developer of the LongPen and associated technologies that facilitate the remote robotic writing of documents.
  3. She is a winner of the Arthur C. Clarke Award and Prince of Asturias Award for Literature.
  4. A few of her best novels are The Handmaid`s Tale, the Robber Bride, and The Year of the Flood among others.

3) Karnataka Bank gets award.

  • Karnataka Bank Ltd has bagged CFBP (Council for Fair Business Practices) Jamnalal Bajaj award for fair business practices. The bank has been awarded under the ‘service enterprises – large’ category.
  • Mahabaleshwara MS, Chief General Manager of the bank, received the award from Ajay Piramal, Chairman of Piramal Group, in Mumbai.
  • Karnataka Bank is a major banking institution based in the coastal city of Mangaluru in Karnataka, India. The Reserve Bank of India has designated Karnataka Bank as an A1+-class scheduled commercial bank.
  • The bank now has a national presence with a network of 731 branches and above 1230 ATM`s across 21 states and two Union territories. The bank has the Best Bank Award for "Managing IT Risk" under small bank category for the year 2010-11.

4) Baahubali wins 5 awards at Filmfare South Awards.

  • `Baahubali` won five awards including the Best Film at the 63rd Britannia Filmfare (South) Awards in the Telugu films category.
  • While Mahesh Babu won the Best Actor award for the Telugu film `Srimanthudu`,
  • Notably, these awards have been honouring professionals in the Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada film industries since 1970.

5) Kerala Tourism bags four awards at `FilmAT` International film festival in Poland.

  • Kerala Tourism has won four awards at ‘FilmAT’ which is one of the biggest international film festivals dedicated to tourism, art and ecology in Poland.
  • ‘Responsible Tourism’ initiative started by Kerala Tourism has won three awards under categories of the Best Promotional Social Campaign, Protection of Nature, and Eco-Food categories respectively.
  • The tourism board’s ad film `The Great Backwaters of Kerala` has won the `Best Editing Award`.
  • The FilmAT festival is associated with the International Committee of Tourism Film Festivals.
     

6) Kannada film `Thithi` wins best film award in 19th Shanghai International Film Festival.

  • `Thithi`, a Kannada film won the best film award and best script writers award at the Asia New Talent Awards in the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival.
  • The director, Raam Reddy made his debut through this film. It is the only Indian film that has been selected for screening in the festival of Shanghai.
  • The Jury was from China, Japan, and Korea and they unanimously loved the film.

7) Six Indian WW1 warriors’ gets place in Digital Archive of United Kingdom.

  • Six Indian World War I (WW-I) heroes became part of Britain’s new digital archive. The archive was launched as part of UK government’s centenary celebrations of WW-I and aims to tell the inspiring stories of war heroes.
  • The new Digital Archive was launched by Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to chronicle individual biographies of the war heroes. The new digital archive can be accessed through the UK government’s official gov.uk portal.

The Indians to be archived digitally for their important role during the War are:

  1. Risaldar Badlu Singh from Punjab.
  2. Sepoy Chatta Singh from Uttar Pradesh
  3. Naik Darwan Singh Negi from Uttar Pradesh (modern day Uttarakhand)
  4. Lance Naik Lala from Himachal Pradesh
  5. Rifleman Gabar Sing Negi from modern day Uttarakhand
  6. Lance-Daffadar Gobind Singh from Rajasthan
  7. These six Indian soldiers were part of some 175 men from 11 overseas countries who were awarded Britain’s award for valour, the Victoria Cross (VC), during the war. They were all awarded for their prominent bravery on the battlefield.

8) PatanjaliYogpeeth sets `sirsasana` world record.

  • The PatanjaliYogpeeth Trust created a new Guinness World Record of 408 people simultaneously doing the ‘sirsasana’ (headstand).
  • The event, presided over by yoga guru Baba Ramdev, was held on the occasion of the second International Yoga Day in Faridabad.
  • It was reportedly attended by over one lakh citizens including BJP National President Amit Shah.

9) 2,000 women set world record in pregnatal yoga.

  • Nearly 2,000 pregnant women set a new world record by performing yoga in Rajkot, Gujarat, on the occasion of International Yoga Day.
  • This breaks the previous record in prenatal yoga that had 940 pregnant women in China participate in the activity.
  • Further, 8,000 children in Gujarat set a world record by making a human chain.
