1) Brett Lee retires from all forms of cricket.

  • Australian pace bowler Brett Lee announced he is to retire from all forms of cricket after a 20-year career.
About Brett Lee:
  1. Lee played 76 Tests for Australia, taking 310 wickets, and 221 one-dayers with 380 dismissals.
  2. His fastest delivery cracked the 161 kilometers per hour mark (100 miles per hour), with the blond speedster consistently bowling at 150 kph over 20 years.
  3. He has been an exceptional cricketer who gained fans around the world not only for his electrifying pace and performances with the ball.
 
2) Indian men football team got Stephen Constantine as head coach.
  • Stephen Constantine was appointed as the head coach of Indian men’s football team on 16 January 2015. He will supervise both the senior and under-23 football teams.
  • This is the second time that 52-year-old Constantine has been appointed as the coach of Indian football team. He served as India’s coach from 2002 to 2005, during which the team achieved its best-ever ranking of 109. During that tenure India won the LG Cup in Vietnam and finished runners-up in the Afro-Asian Games. 
  • Current world ranking of the Indian football team is 171. 
 
4) 13th Parsvanth International Grandmasters Chess Tournament title won by Andrey Baryshpolets.
  • Ukrainian Grandmaster Andrey Baryshpolets won the 13th Parsvanth International Grandmasters Chess Tournament on 16 January 2015.
  • He defeated Deepan Chakkravarthy of India in the 10th and final round of the Tournament that was held in New Delhi.
  • India’s performance at 13th Parsvanth International Grandmasters Chess Tournament.
  • Deepan Challravarthy finished as the best performing Indian as he finished tenth on seven points despite losing the last round game.
  • Abhijeet Gupta won his last round game against Himal Gusain to end 11th on seven points. 
  • As many as five International Master Norms were secured in the tournament. These were C.R.G. Krishna, Aniruddha Deshpandey, Abhishek Kelkar, M. Kunal and S. Ravi Teja.

5) Petra Kvitova won women`s single title of Sydney International Tennis tournament.

  • Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic won the women’s single title of Sydney International Tennis tournament.
  • She won the title defeating Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic.
  • This is the 15th career title won by former Wimbledon Champion and World No.4 Kvitova.
Men’s Singles:
  1. Won: Viktor Troicki (Serbia).
  2. Runner: Mikhail Kukus kin (Kazakastan). 
 
6) AB de Villiers scored fastest century in ODI.
  • South African captain AB de Villiers scored fastest century in one day international match against West Indies.
  • He scored 100 runs in just 31 balls and breaks the record of Corey Anderson of New Zealand who scored 100 in 36 balls.
  • He also scored fastest half century (50 runs) in 16 balls and breaks the record of previous best mark (50 in 17 balls) of Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya against Pakistan in 1996.
  • Overall, De Villiers made 149 off 44 balls. His innings included 16 sixes, which equalled the record set by Rohit Sharma on the way to a score of 209 for India against Australia in Bangalore in 2013/14.
  • With the help of Ab De Villiers (149) and Hashim Amla (153) century, South Africa set record total of 439/2 in 50 overs against West Indies.
  • South Africa defeated West Indies by 148 runs as West Indies team scores only 291 in 7 wickets in 50 overs.  
 

7) Jimjang Deru created national record in weightlifting in 56 kg category.

  • Weightlifter Jimjang Deru of Arunachal Pradesh created national record in weightlifting by lifting 238 kilograms under the 56 kilograms category.
  • He created the record at the 10th Youth National Weightlifting Championship held in Yamuna Nagar, Haryana.
  • He lifted 103 kilograms in snatch and 135 kilograms in Clean & Jerk to clinch the GOLD. Earlier in the first week of January 2015, he became the Asian Youth Champion in the 56 kg category at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Doha, Qatar
 
8) Sania Mirza wins Sydney Open title.
  • India`s Sania Mirza won her first title of the season and 23rd of her career when she and Bethanie Mattek-Sands shocked top-seeded Americans Abigail Spears and Raquel Kops-Jones in the summit clash of the Sydney International.
  • The unseeded Indo-American combine humbled the top seeds 6-3, 6-3 in just 69 minutes.
  • Sania and Bethanie earned 470 ranking points each and split $39,000 as prize money.
  • Sydney International Tennis Tournament:
  • Sydney International tennis Tournament also known as Apia International Sydney is one of the oldest professional tennis tournaments of the world. It started in 1885. The tournament was used by colonial officials as a means to select the Davis Cup team. 
 
9) Viktor Troicki won Men’s Single title of Sydney International Tennis Tournament.
  • Viktor Troicki of Serbia won Men’s Single title of Sydney International Tennis Tournament.  
  • He won the title by defeating Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-3 in the final. With this win, Troicki jumped to rank 54 from his current ranking of 92.
  • His carrier best rank was 12. The Sydney win was the second ATP career title for Troicki.
