1) Denmark’s Mogens Lykketoft elected as President of UN General Assembly.
 
  • Mogens Lykketoft from Denmark was unanimously elected as President of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • He was only the nominee put forward by the Western Europe and other group (WEOG).
  • Mogens Lykketoft succeeds Uganda’s Sam Kutesa who was President of 69th session of UNGA.
  • Presently, Lykketoft is President (speaker) of Denmark’s Parliament since 2011. Earlier he had served as Cabinet Minister in Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen led government and had held portfolios such as Finance Minister (1993 to 2000) and Foreign Minister (2000 to 2001).
 
About UNGA President:
 
  1. The President is elected annually on rotational basis between the five geographic groups namely African, Asian, Eastern European, Latin American and Caribbean and Western European and other States.
  2. Interesting fact: Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was first and only Indian to serve as President of UNGA in 1953. She was also the first woman President of UNGA.
2) Sunil Chhetri becomes the first Indian footballer to score 50 international goals.
 
  • Sunil chhetri had scored 50 goals in 87 matches. At present, he is captain of Indian Football team.
  • He became the first Indian footballer to score 50 international goals during his team`s 2018 World Cup qualifying match against Guam.
 
About Sunil Chhetri:
 
  1. Chhetri began his career with Mohun Bagan of the National Football League after playing with City FC of New Delhi.
  2. He was awarded with arjuna award in 2011.

 

3) Mohammed Morsi death sentence upheld by Egypt court.
 
  • The sentence was initially passed in May, but was confirmed after consultation with Egypt`s highest religious figure, the Grand Mufti.
  • The death sentences of five other leading members of the Muslim Brotherhood, including its supreme guide Mohammed Badie, were also upheld.
  • Morsi escaped from Wadi Natroun prison in January 2011 and was accused of colluding with foreign militants in a plot to free Islamists during mass prison breaks.
4) Beno Zephine became first 100% blind officer in IFS.
 
  • Chennai’s NL Beno Zephine became the first 100 percent visually-challenged person to be inducted into the Indian Foreign Services (IFS).
  • Beno cleared her civil service examinations conducted in 2013.
  • While preparing for the exam, she took help of software named Job Access with Speech (JAWS), which was a replacement of Brialle.
  • The software allows visually challenged to read from a computer screen, and can scan Tamil and English books.
  • This progressive development can be seen against the Supreme Court of India’s order. In its order, it had directed the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) to calculate backlog vacancies for the differently-abled and then accommodate them under the Persons with Disabilities Act 1995.
 
5) CBI registers FIR against Vaghela in NTC land scam.
 
  1. CBI has registered an FIR against former Union Textile Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela and six others including the then Chairman-cum-Managing Director of National Textile Corporation for sale of prime property in Mumbai allegedly at "throwaway prices" to a private company.
6) Keith Vaz re-elected as chairman of UK Parliament committee.
 
  • Britain’s longest-serving Indian-origin MP, Keith Vaz was re-elected as chairman of Parliaments Home Affairs Select Committee for the third time.
 
About Nigel Keith Anthony Standish Vaz:
  • Keith Vaz is a British Labour Party politician who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Leicester East since the 1987 election. He has been the Chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee since July 2007.
  • He was appointed as a member of the Privy Council in June 2006.
  • Between October 1999 and June 2001 he served as a Minister for Europe, Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
7) CBI Registers Preliminary Enquiry Against Himachal CM Virbhadra Singh.
 
  • The CBI has initiated an enquiry against Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to probe alleged disproportionate assets worth Rs. 6.1 crore amassed while he was serving as Union Minister of Steel.
  • The agency claims that the present probe is an offshoot of its ongoing inquiry into alleged bribe payment made to Mr. Singh by a steel firm.
8) Galaxy named as CR7 after footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.
 
  • Astronomers have named a newly discovered galaxy as CR7 (COSMOS Redshift 7) after Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.
  • Ronaldo is famously known as CR7 after his initials and his jersey number.
  • He had won Fifa’s Ballon d’Or award consecutively for two years in 2013 and 2014 and has scored a staggering 66 goals this season.
 
Facts about CR7 galaxy:
  1. It was discovered by using European Southern Observatory’s (ESO’s) Very Large Telescope (VLT).
  2. CR7 is three times brighter compared to Himiko galaxy which was earlier thought be as brightest distant galaxy known to mankind.
  3. It is part of the early universe which contains the first generation of stars i.e. known as Population III stars.
  4. CR7 belongs to the age of the ancient Universe which existed 800 million years after the Big Bang. This period is known as reionization period.
