1) Justice M L Tahaliyani sworn in as Lokayukta of Maharashtra.

  • He was administered the oath of office by the Governor Vidyasagar Rao at the oath taking ceremony held in Raj Bhavan in Mumbai.
  • Justice Tahaliyani will succeed Justice PB Gaikwad whose term as Lokayukta had ended on July 2014. He is a retired judge of the Bombay High Court.

  1. Justice Tahaliyani was born at Sardar Shahar in Rajasthan. He was often called a ‘green judge’ due to his passion for nature.
  2. He had started his legal practising career Gondia and Chandrapur in Maharashtra after obtaining law degree from Nagpur in 1977.
  3. He was appointed as Assistant Public Prosecutor at Gadchiroli in 1979 and had worked in that capacity at Gadchiroli, Desaiganj, Sironcha and Warora.
  4. He also has served as Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Mumbai in 1997. He was elevated as High Court Judge in 2011.
2) U.S. designates Aziz Haqqani as `global terrorist`.
 
  • Abdul Aziz Haqqani, a top leader of Pakistan-based dreaded Haqqani network, has been named as a `Specially Designated Global Terrorist` by the United States for his involvement in planning and carrying out attacks against Afghanistan.
  • Popularly known as Aziz Haqqani, he assumed the leadership role of the Haqqani network after the death of his brother Badruddin Haqqani. The Haqqani Network has planned and carried out a number of significant kidnappings and attacks against US interests in Afghanistan, as well as Afghan government and civilian targets.
 

3) PM Narendra Modi pays tribute to Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day and congratulated sportspersons and coaches who would be conferred with various sports awards.
  • Dhyan Chand`s birthday is being celebrated as the National Sports Day in the country.
 
About Dhyan Chand:
 
  1. Born: 29 August 1905
  2. Dhyan Chand was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh in a Rajput family.
  3. Dhyan Chand was an Indian field hockey player, who is widely considered as the greatest field hockey player of all time.

4) Boxer Manoj Kumar dragged the Sports Ministry to court after being overlooked for Arjuna award.

  • Like the past editions, selection controversies cast a shadow on the ceremony and matters came to a head when boxer Manoj Kumar dragged the Sports Ministry to court after being overlooked for the Arjuna award despite qualifying in the new points system.
  • Add to this, the awards selection committee did not find any athlete worthy of the country`s highest sporting honour - the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna - this year.
  • None of the seven candidates, whose names were forwarded to the committee, got the 12-member panel`s nod, making it the first time since 1994 when no sportsperson was named for the top award.

5) Y Shiva Santosh Kumar NLSIU topper with 14 gold medals.
 
  • Y Shiva Santosh Kumar, who has bagged 14 gold medals at the 23rd convocation of National Law School of India University (NLSIU) hails from Andhra Pradesh has showed excellence in the course.
  • The award ceremony was held at Bangalore.
