1) Punjabi University won Maulana Abul Kalam Azad trophy 2014.

 

  • The Trophy will be awarded to University on the occasion of National Sports Day.
  • The award was announced by the Association of Indian Universities by releasing the names and points of top nine universities in sports in India.
  • In the list Punjabi University has topped with 71,840 points. Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar was placed at second spot with 65,170 points while Delhi University is placed third with 31,770 points


About Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy:

 

  1. The Trophy is given annually to the university/institutions for their all-round performance in Inter-University Tournaments.
  2. Established in 1956-57 as a Running Trophy by Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the memory of scholar and a senior political leader Maulana Azad.
  3. Replica of the Trophy and a monetary award of ten lakh rupees which shall be utilized for development of games and sports.



2) Rajendra Singh wins Stockholm Water Prize.

 

  • Rajendra Singh(popularly known as "Water Man"), environmental activist based in Rajasthan, has been conferred the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize.
  • Rajendra Singh was named for the prestigious award for his innovative water restoration efforts, improving water security in rural India, and for showing extraordinary courage and determination in his quest to improve the living conditions for those most in need.
  • King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Patron of the Stockholm Water Prize presented the prize at a Royal Award Ceremony during World Water Week in Swedish Capital Stockholm.


About Stockholm Water Prize:

 

  1. Stockholm Water Prize is a prestigious award that recognises outstanding achievements in water related activities.
  2. The prize, created and financed by the Stockholm Water Foundation and administered by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) , includes a 150,000 USD award and an Orrefors crystal sculpture.

 

3) Scientist Dr Modadugu Vijay Gupta to receive inaugural Sunhak Peace Prize.

 

  • Indian agricultural scientist Dr Modadugu Vijay Gupta has been chosen for the inaugural Sunhak Peace Prize.
  • Dr. M.V. Gupta has been selected for this award for his pioneering work in the blue revolution. He has invested his entire life to developing sustainable aquaculture as an alternative solution to the future food crisis.
  • He will receive the first Sunhak Peace Prize in South Korean Capital city of Seoul along with President of Kiribati Islands Anote Tong.


About Sunhak Peace Prize:

 

  1. Sunhak Peace Prize was founded earlier in 2015 by South Korean religious leader Dr Hak Ja Han Moon.
  2. It is an annual award that recognises eminent individuals from around the world for their contribution to peace and development of the world.



4) Lionel Messi crowned UEFA Best Player in Europe as Barcelona star.

 

  • Lionel Messi added another individual trophy to his collection, being voted UEFA`s Best Player in Europe for last season.
  • Barcelona star beat Luis Suarez, his teammate at the Champions League winner, and Real Madrid`s Cristiano Ronaldo in a Europe-wide poll of journalists.


About UEFA Best Player in Europe Award:

 

  1. UEFA Best Player in Europe Award is an association football award given to the footballer playing for a football club in Europe that is considered the best in the previous season.

 

5) Mountaineer Jot Singh awarded Tenzing Norgay National Adventure award.

 

  • Indo-Tibetan Border Police official and mountaineer Jot Singh has been honoured with the Tenzing Norgay national adventure award .
  • He was bestowed with the award by President Pranab Mukherjee during the national sports awards presentation ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on the eve of National Sports Day

About Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award:

 

  1. It is named after Indian and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay.
  2. It is an annual award given by Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. He was one of the first two individuals (along with Edmund Hillary) known to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953.



6) Sikh man named `Australian of the Day`.

 

  • An Indian-origin driver in Australia Tejinder Pal Singh was named as Australian of the Day by Commonwealth Bank of Australia for feeding the homeless in Darwin for the past three years.
  • He dedicated the last Sunday of every month to feed the poor and homeless in northern Darwin after his night shift as a cabbie. He cooked around 30 kg of Indian food to feed the homeless. The free lunch comprises chickpeas, rice and vegetarian curry.
  • His van itself carries the sign Free Indian food for hungry and needy people, Provide Sikh family.
  • The Commonwealth Bank has been sponsoring the Australian of the Day campaign for over 35 years. The campaign recognises the extraordinary Australians who have made a big difference to the country.
