Four medical colleges in Telangana state and six medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh have been denied permission for renewal for MBBS sets for 2018-19 academic year. Nearly 82 medical colleges from across the country have been blocked from offering MBBS courses by the ministry of health and family welfare. A whopping number of 11,800 medical seats have been lost due to this decision. Gitam Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Visakhapatnam, a prestigious college has also been featured in the list.
The state with the most number of renewal denials is Uttar Pradesh that has 15 medical colleges which have not been granted permission. While a few colleges on the list are recent start-ups with no batch that has passed out, a few have been running for years and have had more than six graduating classes. Two institutions in Telangana that have been denied renewal are new colleges. The decision has got mixed responses with experts stating that the medical council has taken the right step as there are many private medical colleges’ pro-viding super specialty courses.
