It shows the time of the action or event. There are three tenses. SIMPLE PRESENT OR PRESENT INDEFINITE TENSE :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is used to express what actually happens at the time of speaking,<br>e.g. :<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><ol><li>Here&nbsp;<strong>comes<\/strong>&nbsp;John.<\/li><\/ol>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Children&nbsp;<strong>do<\/strong>&nbsp;not&nbsp;<strong>sit<\/strong>&nbsp;quietly in one place.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is used to express habitual action :<br>e.g. : I&nbsp;<strong>get<\/strong>&nbsp;up early in the morning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is used to express general or universal truths :<br>e.g. : The earth&nbsp;<strong>is<\/strong>&nbsp;round.<br>Stars&nbsp;<strong>twinkle<\/strong><br>We&nbsp;<strong>grow<\/strong>&nbsp;paddy.<br>Speed&nbsp;<strong>thrills<\/strong>&nbsp;but&nbsp;<strong>kills<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is used to express future action that has already been planned :<br>e.g. : Our college&nbsp;<strong>reopens<\/strong>&nbsp;on 16th June.<br>He&nbsp;<strong>sails<\/strong>&nbsp;for England next Monday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is used to express historic present:<br>e.g. :<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><ol><li>Sivaji now sees the danger and immediately&nbsp;<strong>kills<\/strong>&nbsp;Afzul Khan with his lion-claws,<\/li><\/ol>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Birbal now&nbsp;<strong>seizes<\/strong>&nbsp;the chance and cracks a joke on his rivals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is used to express an action that is going on at the time of speaking :<br>e.g. :She is&nbsp;<strong>dancing<\/strong>. They are&nbsp;<strong>writing<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is used to express an action that will happen in the future.<br>e.g. : 1) I am&nbsp;<strong>going<\/strong>&nbsp;to Mysore tomorrow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is used to show that some action is in the middle though it is not being done at that time.<br>e.g. : I am&nbsp;<strong>reading<\/strong>&nbsp;a novel.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Note : The following verbs are not generally used in the Continuous Tense : (\u0c08 \u0c15\u0c4d\u0c30\u0c3f\u0c02\u0c26\u0c3f verbs \u0c28\u0c41 \u0c38\u0c3e\u0c2e\u0c3e\u0c28\u0c4d\u0c2f\u0c02\u0c17\u0c3e continuous Tense \u0c32\u0c4b \u0c09\u0c2a\u0c2f\u0c4b\u0c17\u0c3f\u0c02\u0c1a\u0c30\u0c3e\u0c26\u0c41 )<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verbs of sense of perception :<br>hear, see, smell, notice, recognise, taste, feel.<br>Verbs of appearing : look, seem, appear.<br>Verbs of thinking :<br>Suppose, think, believe, realise, understand, know, imagine, mean, agree, consider, trust, remember, forget, expect, recall.<br>Verbs of emotions :<br>want, wish, desire, feel, like, love, hate, prefer, hope, refuse.<br>Miscellaneous :<br>own, possess, keep, concern, matter, owe etc.<br>e.g. : He is looking fine. (Wrong)<br>He looks fine. (Correct)<br>I am believing you. (Wrong)<br>I believe you. (Correct)<br>She is understanding me. (Wrong)<br>She understands me. (Correct)<br>I am hating you. (Wrong)<br>I hate you. (Correct)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. PRESENT PERFECT TENSE :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>i) It is used to denote an action that has just been completed.<br>e.g. : The train&nbsp;<strong>has arrived<\/strong>.<br>They&nbsp;<strong>have finished<\/strong>&nbsp;the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ii) It is used to express a past action the result of which continues :<br>e.g. : I&nbsp;<strong>have not seen<\/strong>&nbsp;Ravi for many months.<br>He&nbsp;<strong>has been<\/strong>&nbsp;ill since Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>iii) It is used to refer to a past action in a more general way :<br>e.g. :&nbsp;<strong>Have<\/strong>&nbsp;you ever&nbsp;<strong>been<\/strong>&nbsp;to Simla ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>iv) A few adverbs or adverbial phrases are used with the Present Perfect Tense :<br>just, never, ever, so far, till, yet, already, since, today, this week etc.<br>e.g. :<strong>&nbsp;I have just posted<\/strong>&nbsp;the letter.<br><strong>So<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>far<\/strong>&nbsp;he&nbsp;<strong>has<\/strong>&nbsp;not&nbsp;<strong>come<\/strong>.<br>He&nbsp;<strong>has<\/strong>&nbsp;not&nbsp;<strong>received<\/strong>&nbsp;the money&nbsp;<strong>yet<\/strong>.<br><strong>This week<\/strong>&nbsp;there&nbsp;<strong>have been<\/strong>&nbsp;no rains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is used to refer to an action that begins in the past and continuous through a given period of time up to the present moment.<br>e.g. :&nbsp;<strong>I have been waiting<\/strong>&nbsp;here for Ramu&nbsp;<strong>for<\/strong>&nbsp;two hours.<br><strong>I have been waiting<\/strong>&nbsp;here for Ramu&nbsp;<strong>since<\/strong>&nbsp;3 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note : \u2018For\u2019 denotes period of time.<br>\u2018Since\u2019 denotes point of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Observe the following sentences :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>He has been painting<\/strong>&nbsp;the door&nbsp;<strong>for<\/strong>&nbsp;2 p.m. (Wrong)<br><strong>He has been painting<\/strong>&nbsp;the door&nbsp;<strong>since<\/strong>&nbsp;2 p.m. (Correct)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The workers&nbsp;<strong>have been demanding<\/strong>&nbsp;more wages&nbsp;<strong>since<\/strong>&nbsp;ten days. (Wrong)<br>The workers&nbsp;<strong>have been demanding<\/strong>&nbsp;more wages&nbsp;<strong>for<\/strong>&nbsp;ten days. (Correct)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. SIMPLE PAST OR PAST INDEFINITE TENSE :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>i) It is used to express the action completed in the past. PAST PERFECT TENSE :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is used to express an action which had been completed at some point in the past time before another action in the past. Sentences with conditional clauses use fixed patterns of Tenses.<br>Conditions are of four types :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Real conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unreal or improbable conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Past unfulfilled conditions and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zero conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The tense forms used in a sentence are determined by the type of the condition in that sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at the following examples :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If it&nbsp;<strong>rains, I will not come<\/strong>&nbsp;to your home.<br>(Real condition-Simple present in the conditional clause and Simple Future in the main clause)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If I&nbsp;<strong>were<\/strong>&nbsp;a bird,&nbsp;<strong>I would fly<\/strong>&nbsp;high in the sky. (Unreal condition \u2013 Simple Past (were-even with I) in the conditional clause and \u2018would+V\u2019 in the main clause)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If he&nbsp;<strong>had worked<\/strong>&nbsp;hard, he&nbsp;<strong>would have passed<\/strong>&nbsp;the examination.<br>(Past unfulfilled condition-Past Perfect in the conditional clause and would + have + Past Participle of verb in the main clause).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&nbsp;<strong>heat<\/strong>&nbsp;metals, they&nbsp;<strong>expand<\/strong>.<br>(Zero conditions : The action certainly leads to the second action. In such cases we use simple present to express a future action.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>b) Using present progressive tense : (Present continuous tense) We are planning an exhibition of paintings in December this year.<br>You&nbsp;<strong>are visiting Bali<\/strong>&nbsp;on your trip to Indonesia next month. (These are events that have been planned. Very likely these events will take place in the future, but there is a likelihood of these events being rescheduled.
