Skills and Attributes: The test is designed to test the persons through knowledge about the subject. The National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine eligibility for lectureship for Indian nationals to ensure the minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research. The test is conducted in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Science.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the UGC- CSIR NET for natural sciences viz. Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Earth Atmospheric Ocean and Planetary Sciences jointly with the UGC.

Recruitment Process: There is a written test consisting of two papers. The first part is of General Paper on Teaching & Research Aptitude. This paper is designed to test the Teaching and Research Aptitude of the Candidate.

The second paper is of the respective subject i.e. in which the candidate has a post-graduation degree. This paper is designed to test the candidates command over the subject.

Once the candidate clears the test he/she becomes eligible to apply for the post of lecturer in lieu of the advertisement for the post. Many states also conduct a test of similar nature called as SLET or the State Lecturer Eligibility Test viz. M.P.S.L.E.T. or the Madhya Pradesh State Lecturer Eligibility Test
