Anshu Malik:1st Indian woman wrestler to reach World Championship final:

Anshu Malik became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the finals of the 2021 World Wrestling Championships on October 6, 2021.

Key facts:

  • She made history by defeating junior European champion Solomiia Vynnyk.
  • Anshu, a 19-year-old Indian wrestler and reigning Asian champion, dominated the semi-final from the start. In the 57 kg category, she won by technical superiority.
  • Only four Indian women wrestlers have won World Championship medals to date: Geeta Phogat in 2012, Babita Phogat in 2012, Pooja Dhanda in 2018 and Vinesh Phogat in 2019. They have all won bronze medals.
  • Anshu is also only the sixth Indian ever to compete in a Worlds gold medal match. Bishambar Singh, Sushil Kumar, Amit Dahiya, Bajrang Punia, and Deepak Punia have all advanced to the gold medal match before her.
  • India has only one world champion, Sushil Kumar.

Who is Anshu Malik?

Anshu Malik is a freestyle wrestler from India. In the Cadet Wrestling Championships, she won gold in the 60 kg weight category. She won a bronze medal in the 57 kg weight category at the 2020 Asian Wrestling Championships, which were held in New Delhi in 2020. She also took silver in the women`s 57 kg event at the 2020 Individual Wrestling World Cup in Serbia. She won a gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2021. She comes from a wrestling family. Coach Jagdeesh is her trainer at the Chaudhary Bharat Singh Memorial Sports School in Nidani. Dharamvir Malik, her father, was an international wrestler who worked for the CISF.
