Almost everyone wants to pursue a management course from one of the premier B-schools of the country. What makes these B-schools unique and how they are different and better from others? Many factors make them better than rest of the management schools. To know to ranking of these management institutions, rankings have been conducted by various media houses about their raking and grading plays very crucial role.
One of leading news channel CNBC -TV 18 released `The A-list of B-Schools Ranking-2011`. In this ranking too IIM-Ahemdabad leads the ranking and continues to be at the top place for MBA education in the country. The ranking were dominated by the leading IIMs such as IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta and IIM Lucknow followed next. MDI, XLRI, NITIE and FMS broke this monopoly as they took up the next 4 positions. NITIE made remarkable gain along with IIM Kozhikode to secure a place among the Top 10. XLRI and FMS saw a minor drop in their ranking this year.
These ranking were created on the basis of using a detailed dual methodology which surveyed key stakeholders in management education including B-School institutions, Faculty and recruiters. This in-depth methodology, includes an extensive data based on quantitative survey as well as perception based inputs, making it India`s largest and most comprehensive B-School ranking.
Suresh Venkat, Executive Editor, CNBC-TV18 said "These rankings are an attempt to provide insights on which prospective students can make effective decisions on their B-School journey as they navigate an increasingly complex set of choices today. Premchand Palety, Chief Executive of Centre for Forecasting & Research (C-fore) said "One unique feature of the survey is that it is based primarily on objective data. The weightage to perceptual data has never exceeded 25%. The prime objective of ranking is to elevate the standard of business education in the country. The purpose of ranking is not to perpetuate brand myth but to evaluate the actual performance of a B-school against different parameters. We recognise the leadership role B-schools can play in creating new knowledge. So, we give substantial weightage to the research output of an institute. This year, 6 broad parameters and 54 sub parameters were used to assess a B-school."

The ranking was based on certain parameters and methodology. In this survey 113 schools were participated.
Objective scores were obtained by evaluating b-schools against the following five broad parameters:
1. Intellectual capital
2. Placement performance
3. Infrastructure and facilities
4. Industry interface
5. International linkages
These were further divided into sub-parameters. The marks were allotted to a b-school against a particular sub parameter by normalizing these against the topper for that parameter.

This year, the placement season looks good with the improvement in global economy turning around and companies aiming to hire more people.
IIM-A: MNCs made highest offers
At IIM-Ahmedabad, the mainstay recruiters-investment banks and consulting firms-started the placement session. They are hiring in large number and they are offering salaries that are up to five times higher as compared to last year. There is a big change in the picture in last two years, just two years ago even IIM-A was forced to extend its placements session and struggled to place all its students with employers. Campus recruitments at the IIMs and other top B-Schools are closely observed by the other industries as it worked as standard parameters. In good years like 2009, many recruiters shy away from campuses.
ISB: Highest domestic consultancy offer
Global strategic advisory boutique The Parthenon Group, has made highest domestic consultancy placement offer of Rs. 32 lakh to four students. This year the students receive a signing bonus of Rs. 3 lakh. This year in current batch most of the students are having more than five years of experience. The institute is expecting a hike in the offers of about 20% as compared to last year. The placement interviews have already started in the month of January and last till first week of April. Companies visiting campus this year includes AT Kearney, McKinsey & Co, Nokia, Cognizant, Deutsche Bank , Punj Lloyd , Philips, Deloitte, Credit Suisse , HP, SAP Labs and the Boston Consulting Group.
IIM-B: Big hopes this year
This year the final placement session will start on 5th March, 2011. The institute is expecting a good placement season this year. The institute is expecting a salary hike between 15-20% this year. Till now the students received 90 offers in pre-placement session. In the lateral placement season the students have received 89 offers till now. This year banking and financial sectors may be the top draw, followed by consulting, IT services and marketing firms. Hospitality and retail majors are showing a keen interest.
This year the procedure is bit different. The process may take a bit longer time, with a bigger batch size. Last year, the batch had 268 students and the placement was over in six days. "We are more cautious this year due to our batch strength," says Sapna Agarwal , head of career and development services, IIMB.
XIMB: Good hike in average salary
XIBM is one of the prestigious B-School of the country. This year XIBM institute witnessed a good placement session. This year the institute achieved 100% placement. The highest international package received by a student is $ 32,650 per year. This year the institute witnessed a good placement season and record higher pay packages. FMCG giant offers highest domestic salary of Rs. 15 lakh a year. The minimum domestic salary was recorded as Rs. 7 lakh per annum. This year students gets mixed offers such as14% students get offers from consultancy and 24% gets offers from IT sector. Some of the major recruiters this year includes Cognizant, PwC, Deloitte and Capgemini. Some egulars such as OLAM International, United Spirits , HP, TCS, Wipro and Tata Steel too visit campus.
IIFT: 10% hike in domestic salary
This year the IIFT record a good placement session. It records a hike of 10% in the domestic salary of the students. The highest domestic package went up to Rs 15.51 lakh. Olam International offers highest international package at $1,50,000. This year 96 companies participated in the placement session, including 37 new recruiters. Some of the companies that participated in the placements includes; Olam International, Aditya Birla Group, Triton Group and Jumbo Electronics, Citibank, Deutsche Bank, HSBC and Nomura Holdings. FMCG company Procter & Gamble recruited for the first time.

Some things never change and some are impossible to beat. Like always, IIM- Ahmedabad has once again emerged the winner! This premiere institute has topped the list of the business schools in India.
According to a survey conducted by Business World and Research agency Synovate, IIM Ahmedabad is the No. 1 B-school, while IIM Calcutta is India`s No. 2 B-school. Xavier Labour Relations Institute or XLRI is pegged at No. 3; IIM-Kozhikode is ranked at No. 4. NITIE Mumbai is ranked at No. 5.
Business World, a leading business magazine, conducts B-school Rankings every year. In all 111 Institutes were covered in the objective survey, while a total of 50 institutes were covered in `perceptual survey`.
Some of the leading B-schools like IIM Bangalore, IIM Lucknow, BIMTECH (Greater Noida) and a few IIT B-schools did not participate in the ranking exercise.
Some interesting trends came to light during this survey. A lot of B-schools across all tiers have increased student intake - mostly IIMs because they now have to admit underprivileged as part of government quotas. Some other institutes like Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai, and SPJIMR have raised intake to account for the growing demand. As student intake increases, so does the infrastructure. IIM-Indore, IIM-Calcutta and IIM-Lucknow are doing it in a big way.
As per the report, some premieres B-schools are opening multiple campuses to cater to the nearly 240,000 students who seek admission into a B-school every year.
This survey also showed us that despite a shortage of faculty, the placement season is picking up.
