PhD Positions in High-Energy Astrophysics, 2017

INTRODUCTION

Applications are invited for 2 PhD positions in high energy astrophysics. The positions are joint between the group of Dr. Diego Altamirano at the University of Southampton (UK) and the group of Prof. Mariano Mendez at the University of Groningen (NL). The candidates will spend about half of the time at each institute and will receive a joint PhD diploma from both universities.

COURSE AND ELIGIBILITY

The PhD projects are mainly observational, and aim at answering long-standing questions in the area of accretion onto compact objects. The students will use data from state-of-the-art X-ray telescopes like Chandra, XMM-Newton, Nustar, Astrosat and Swift. Some projects may also include modelling and simulations. Candidates are expected to have a master in physics or astrophysics; good knowledge of Linux and programming will be valued. Experience in X-ray data analysis is not necessary but would be considered an asset. For more information, please contact Dr. Diego Altamirano (d.altamirano-at-soton.ac.uk) or Prof. Mariano Mendez (mariano-at-astro.rug.nl)

CAREER PROSPECTS

To apply, please email a 1-page cover/motivation letter + CV to both d.altamirano-at-soton.ac.uk and mariano-at-astro.rug.nl. Applicants should also arrange for 3 letters of references (in PDF format) to be mailed to the same email addresses. The positions are available to start right away, and we will consider applications as received until the positions are filled.

PAY PACKAGE

An annual bursary A full tuition fee waiver for EU students. Applications are welcome from international applicants but the applicant must make appropriate arrangements to cover the difference in tuition fee (more information on request).
