COURSE AND ELIGIBILITY
Selection policy for Australian Catholic University Commonwealth Scholarships
1. Australian Catholic University (ACU) will offer at least the number of Commonwealth Scholarships (CS) it is allocated for a year in that year.
2. Applicants may apply for more than one type of CS.
3. A student will not be selected for a CS unless ACU is satisfied that the student meets, or will meet, before any CS payment is made, the eligibility criteria as set out in the Commonwealth Scholarships Guidelines made under section 238-10 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003, regarding:
* Citizenship (must be an Australian citizen or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa)
* Low socio-economic background (must be in receipt of Commonwealth income support payments);
* Commonwealth-supported student status; and
* Course and full-time status (requires at least 75% of an equivalent full-time study load, except in exceptional and demonstrated circumstances).
4. In addition a student will not be selected for a Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (CAS) unless ACU is satisfied that the student meets, or will meet, before any CS payment is made, the eligibility criteria as set out in the Commonwealth Scholarships Guidelines made under section 238-10 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003, regarding:
* rural or regional background;
* the necessity to move from a rural or regional area to undertake their chosen course of study;
* the incurring of additional accommodation costs as a result of the necessity to move; and
ACU internal student status.
5. In addition a student who is the recipient of other scholarship/s of a combined value greater than $6,000 will not be selected for a CS, with exception to the Indigenous Access Scholarship (IAS), as specified in the Commonwealth Scholarships Guidelines made under section 238-10 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003.
6. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the extent to which the applicant meets the eligibility criteria, regardless of the campus attended.
7. Applicants may be awarded more than one CS and hold both scholarships concurrently, for as long as they remain eligible to hold both scholarships.
8. First year (commencing) students will be deemed to have met the satisfactory academic progress criterion by receipt of the offer of a place in the course in which they enrol.
9. Actual grade values and/or the number of days an applicant has been in receipt of Commonwealth income support payments may be considered where applicants are otherwise ranked equal.
10. This policy will be reviewed annually and consequently may vary from year to year.
CAREER PROSPECTS
1. Applicants will be selected on the basis of:
* the eligibility criteria as set out in the Guidelines for Commonwealth Scholarships made under section 238-10 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003, regarding low socio-economic status;
* the eligibility criteria as set out in the Guidelines for Commonwealth Scholarships made under section 238-10 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003, regarding rural and regional background;
* Indigenous status;
* citizenship status;
* demonstrated educational disadvantage; and
* the eligibility criteria as set out in the Guidelines for Commonwealth Scholarships made under section 238-10 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003, regarding undergraduate status.
2. Normally, only applicants who have not been awarded a CS are eligible for an award of an ACU Equity Bursary. Note that receipt of an ACU Equity Bursary in a previous year does not render a person ineligible to apply for a CECS or CAS in a subsequent year.
3. Applicants who are in receipt of a scholarship other than a CS are eligible for an award of an ACU Equity Bursary, provided that the combined value of other scholarship/s is no greater than $6,000.
4. 20 bursaries will be awarded in the following manner:
* one bursary shall be awarded per campus on the basis of the extent to which the applicants meet the eligibility criteria;
* the remaining 14 bursaries shall be awarded on the basis of the extent to which the applicants meet the eligibility criteria, regardless of the campus attended.
5. This policy will be reviewed annually and consequently may vary from year to year.
