Indian Council of Historical Research Doctoral Fellowship

INTRODUCTION

Indian Council of Historical Research Doctoral Fellowships are awarded by the Indian Council of Historical Research, an autonomous organization established under the Societies Registration Act in 1972. The primary aim of the Indian Council of Historical Research is to bring historians together and establish a forum for exchange of views between them by providing fellowships and financial assistance to young teachers in colleges, universities and registered research organizations, as well as extending help to senior scholars who are in need of financial support for carrying out various research activities. A number of research projects are undertaken by the Indian Council of Historical Research every year to this effect. Indian Council of Historical Research Doctoral Fellowships are awarded to scholars who have registered for the degree of Ph.D. or equivalent thereof at an Indian university. No Fellowships are awarded to students studying for M.Phil degree.

COURSE AND ELIGIBILITY

Indian Council of Historical Research Doctoral Fellowships are awarded under the head of Junior Research Fellowships for a period of two years, to candidates who have registered for the degree of Ph.D. or equivalent thereof at an Indian university. Housewives who are exceptionally bright scholars and are not able to take up a regular career are also eligible for the Junior Research Fellowships. For non-NET candidates the Fellowship carries an amount or Rupees Five thousand (Rs. 5000) per month with a contingency grant of Rupees twelve thousand (Rs. 12,000) per annum for a period of two years. For candidates qualifying the NET Examination, the Fellowship carries an amount or Rupees six thousand (Rs. 6000) per month with a contingency grant of Rupees twelve thousand (Rs. 12,000) per annum for a period of two years.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Doctoral Fellowships at Indian Council of Historical Research are open to scholars who have registered for the degree of Ph.D. or equivalent thereof at an Indian university only. Qualifying in the NET Examination is not a must for such candidates. Applications for Junior Research Fellowships should be routed through the institutions where the candidate has registered for Ph.D. Duration of Indian Council of Historical Research Doctoral Fellowship Doctoral Fellowships at Indian Council of Historical Research are normally provided for a period of two years. Fellowships may be extended for a maximum period of six months to one tear in exceptional circumstances.
