Detection of the valve disease through tests
Some tests are required to be conducted to detect the disease of the valve. This is available in all the big hospitals. These tests are known as ECO, ECG and X-Ray. If somebody sees the symptoms of a malfunctioning valve, he should know this from the tests whether the valve is malfunctioning or not.
Types of artificial valves
Two types of artificial valves are made these days. One valve is made from alloys i.e. metals and another from tissues. Metallic valves last longer. After it is fitted, the patient has to take medicine for thinning the blood for the rest of his life.
The selection of the valve should be made by conferring between the patient and the Doctor. If the patient is a male, and his age is below 70, he should then be fitted with a metallic valve. In cases of females and males above 70 years, tissue valve is preferable.
One valve fitting charges come down to 60-70 thousand rupees. When the matter of operation arises, its cost in AIIMS, Delhi cost a lakh of rupees. In private hospitals, it costs 2-2.50 lakhs of rupees.
Post operational care
After the transplantation of metallic valve, the patient has to take medicine to thin blood till the whole of his life so that the blood doesn`t clot on the valve. Thinning of blood enhances the danger of circulation of increase blood flows in the body causing bleeding from mouth or other places. Under such circumstances, index and other tests should be conducted within 2-3 months. Among women with metallic valve, defects develop in the constitution of their children. If the women after the fitting of the valve wish to be pregnant, she should be fitted with the tissue valve. This surgery needs to be repeated after 10-12 years. Those patients having a life expectancy of 10-12 years should be fitted with tissue valve.
Precautions for the valve patients
Enough precautions need to be taken by the valve patients. No part of body should get hurt because this will augment the flow of bleeding. Safeguards against infection should adequately be taken care of. Meals containing vitamins such as cabbages, spinach, caulis flower and tomato must never be eaten because this would thicken the blood. The patient can led a normal life after valve transplant but he must not do anything which causes exertions on heart. Patient having complaints of cough, sore or swollen breathing should get himself treated so that the valve could be prevented from worsening.
Conclusion:
When the mitral valve of heart doesn`t function well, it prevents the backward flow of blood resulting into the seepage of blood in the entire of heart. Through a newer technique, to stop the seepage, the mitral valve clip through the throat i.e. monarch device is fitted into the valve. This is a special technique. This doesn`t require incisions or cut like the open heart surgery. Only a smallish incision is done on the throat from where the monarch device is fitted to set it into the mitral valve. The heart has to work overtime when the mitral valve malfunctions due to which the chances of heart attack and even death increase.
