National Statistics Day is observed on 29 June:

Each year on 29 June National Statistics Day is celebrated. The day is to celebrate Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis `s birthday. The day aims to raise awareness among young people about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and formulating policies. The nation is making homage to Professor Mahalanobis this day. Its main objective of the day is to make the use of statistics popular in everyday life 
 
History:
On 29 June 2007 the National Statistics Day was celebrated for the first time. The Indian Government agreed to recognize and honor the outstanding contribution made in the field of economic planning and statistical growth by late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. GoI declared therefore the observation of `National Statistics Day` on the birthday of late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.
 
Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis:
Father of Indian Statistics is Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. He was born June 29, 1893. He was an Indian Scientist and Statistician. He was a pioneer in studies of anthropometry and pilot surveys. He served as a member of the 1956-61 planning commission. He provided two-sector input-output model for the Second Five Year Plan that was later known as the Nehru-Mahalanobis model.
 
He founded Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata in December 1931. He was awarded with Padma Vibhushan in 1968, the University of Oxford`s Weldon Memorial Prize in 1944, Royal Society Fellow in London in 1945.
