With dozens of reputable GMAT prep courses available today, it may be hard to determine which is right for you. Before making a selection, assess your strengths and weaknesses and identify your goals for the prep course. You should also think about how you like to learn, how much time you have to devote to preparation and how much money you want to invest.

Here are some things to consider as you investigate GMAT prep courses.

1. Specialization

Some companies – like Kaplan and the Princeton Review – offer a wide variety of test prep options. They are essentially jacks of all trades in the test prep business, providing instruction in everything from the LSAT to the GRE. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because experience counts for a lot. However, companies that offer myriad test prep options may not be able to offer highly specialized knowledge of the GMAT like those that focus only on this particular test.

Additionally, some programs tend to be more math-centric and don’t put as much emphasis on the GMAT’s verbal and written requirements. Check to make sure the program has instructors dedicated to each discipline rather than generalists who aren’t experts in either math or verbal test questions.

 2. Type of Instruction

Many GMAT prep course programs offer both online and in-person classroom instruction as part of the package. Some, like Knewton, offer only the online option. The online component allows students to participate from anywhere at any time. While convenient, it also eliminates one-on-one instruction, organic question-and-answer sessions and interaction with peers.

Private tutoring is also available through many test prep companies, but you may pay a premium for this service unless private tutoring hours are included in a comprehensive package. Another option is self-directed study where students purchase books and study materials, but receive no interaction with teachers who can help create a strategy for the GMAT’s specific questions.

3. Price and Guarantee

The cost of a test prep course will vary widely, depending on the type of services you select, whether the course is entirely online and the program’s reputation.

Other programs offer students a guarantee – “raise your score by x-number of points or the course is free” – or students are allowed to retake courses until they feel ready to take the exam. This may seem gimmicky, but it can provide some students with a sense of security, especially if they get to keep studying until their confidence increases.

 4. Ancillary Services

With some GMAT courses, you get just that – classroom instruction. Some programs, like MBA House, offer test coaches as well as a who helps guide students through preparation and the business school application process. Coaches develop strategies for applying to schools that “fit” with each student and help students adhere to an application timeline.

Before you choose the GMAT prep course that’s right for you, assess the parameters of each program to determine if it matches with your goals and expectations. Doing so will ensure you feel confident and prepared when exam day comes.
